Wow. I have always wanted to reat this book --but I don't remember when or where I heard of it or why. I am just as fascinated by Sylvia Plath's poetry and her life as I am by this book. Such a tragedy that her life ended as it did, by suicide, with small children--what could have made her do that with them in mind? What drives the creative spirit, what tortures does it take to make a human soul bear its all, to share with the world a private hell? Yet so eloquently, so easily, so familiarly, as if hearing a story from a friend, and understanding, in the moments spent with her, agreeing that it all seems so reasonable, so "rational", almost, to be going through it . . . and rooting for her that she overcomes, and re-enters the "real world", whatever that is.
I have to confess, I don't get the allure of these "Fly Guy" books. But if you have a son in Kinder or so, I bet he will love them. We are reading and re-reading about 4 different ones right now. This one is my favorite of the bunch. Tedd Arnold writes other kids' books too, and we have a few that we've borrowed from the library.
it was an easy read and pretty cute
There was nothing great about this book. The writing was straightforward and kept me interested. The characters are likeable, but I didn't LOVE them. About halfway through the book, I realized that nothing great was really going to happen either. It was good. I liked it. But certainly didn't love it. It was a quick read though.

A great gift during the holidays, this small book of funny stories is worth the read. The first story is by far the best, when Sedaris talks about his job as an elf at Macy's during the Christmas season.

As I expected, I tore through this in two days. If I ever write a book, I hope I do it as fluidly as Picoult. It never ceases to amaze me that I can barrel through 400+ pages so quickly; I certainly don't know how she does it. I did enjoy this though it didn't seem to prompt heavy discussion like the other works of hers I have read. I agree with Sunflowergirl that the Pagan/Wiccan angle was handled very well. I knew many practicing pagans when I was growing up (not so many now, but still a few) and Picoult definitely paints a fair picture. I too saw the very end coming a mile away, but wasn't bothered by "figuring it out" as it didn't take anything away from the story for me. I thought, when it was finally revealed, that it might stir a least a little bit of sympathy in me for Gillian's character, but it didn't. In fact, I didn't find any of the girls particularly likeable or sympathic, which is an interesting twist in a teenage rape story. All in all, a good read, recommended for those who like Picoult's work, but not, in my opinion, her best book.

Wasn't sure how to rate this one - a rather neatly tied-up last third lets it down just by making it look all too easy. But the dragons! Temeraire's relationship with Laurence, and the beginning of their political awakening, continue the first book's strong development, while the draconic supporting cast are full of endearing quirks (some of the humans are rather more stock characters, though the Grumpy Surgeon and Manipulative Diplomat are both excellent examples of their respective types). There are also several fantastic set-pieces, particularly a night-fight near the start of the book and a sea serpent encounter in the middle - alongside the two action sequences that redeem that faulty last third.
Thia book taught me about evil vs good, choices we make in like and how they effect us, and much more. It only slight annoyed me that it was in an older dialect; after a while i got used to it.

Loved this. It was very powerful and emotional for me to read this, and it reminded me of my childhood and struggling against nature growing up on a farm.
