Some love it. Some hate it. I'm in the former group. (Big surprise, eh?) I don't think it could have ended satisfactorily any other way. Amazing. Simply amazing.
Alan Moore is frequently brilliant, and this is probably my favorite of all his books. Funny as hell without losing its serious edge; great mash-up of a ton of classic literary characters with plenty of references to even more. This is a comic I use to try and lure friends into reading comics- the writing is smart, the characters are excellent, and it is endlessly enjoyable. Too bad the movie was hideously bad. Hideously, hideously awful.

I appreciated getting to know Pres. Bush from his own perspective. I think it would be tough being president.

Just as pleasurable on a second read, although the Reddleman character is as annoying as I remember. (His scolding counterpart in Far From the Madding Crowd is Gabriel Oak, the Christ-like farmer.) Hardy seems to love his audacious female characters, but he can't help but set them up for their due punishment in the end. I may not have given Hardy enough credit on the first read, though; his females' destinites may be predetermined by their characters, rather than Hardy's own limitations. His characters cannot outrun fate, and Eustacia, Bathsheba (Far From the Madding Crowd), and the dark-haired pig part thrower (Jude) are doomed by their own fatal flaws to the ends they meet.
A little graphic in the first section but it sets the stage for what kind of civilization these missionaries were dealing with. Really an amazing book.

I kept thinking of friends as I read this: the Jane-ites who would have loved to have been at the Austen societ conference; the friends fascinated with geisha, and especially during her trip to Havana.
Better than the second one in the 500 kingdoms series (one good knight) not as good as some of Lackey's other books. Entertaining, but not challenging.

As always, John Le Carre does not disappoint.
