Really enjoyed this suspense novel. Would recommend it for teens especially, but all ages will enjoy.

Second in a series of light murder mysteries, set in New York State before the Civil War. The main character is a small-town librarian, Glynis Tryon. The social problems, sexism and racism of 19th century America all all reflect the times in which the story is set. I enjoyed this book and intend to search out the rest in the series and look for other books by this author.
I've read all of this series and I thought it was great.
I'm still working through this one, but so far it's been a good read. My main complaint is that he switches between the areas he's focusing on--Francia, which will go on to become the Holy Roman Empire, Constantinople, and Baghdad--seemingly at random, which makes it a bit hard to follow [much like the work of Janet Martin]. The book is written as a narrative history; not quite a novel, but easier to read and generally more entertaining than a textbook or straight biography. I wouldn't recommend using it as a major source for a research paper, but it does have some good excerpts from contemporary writings. For me as a history major, this book just doesn't quite cut it; but for anyone who is interested in the subject and doesn't want to be bored to tears reading about it, I would recommend this book.
The great thing about reading the Narnia Chronicles as a child was that I didn't read any deeper than what was literally presented on the page. It was a wonderful, magical journey which completely satisfied a sixth grader.

I couldn't get through this book. The chick annoyed me. It seemed as though she was writing about the kind of experience she HOPED to have. But in the end it comes off as insincere.
I have no idea of where to start with this review. I enjoyed the book, but did not seem to LOVE it like some other reviewers have??? The storyline... The storyline for this book was different and unusual. There are 5 different factions and each one had different beliefs. When a person turns of age, they take a test to determine which faction they are compatible with. Then at the choosing ceremony, they get to choose which faction they would like to join. Of course, the book would be boring if our little heroin chose her own faction, so , she chose a different faction. Dauntless which is the faction of courage. Each new member is put through an initiation of sorts and if you pass, then you may join the faction. If not, then you will be factionless. The Characters.... Beatrice is one tough cookie! Dauntless was the perfect faction for her. She is nervous and scared, but brave enough to do what needs to be done in order to survive. I really liked Four too! He is edgy and mysteriously sexy. Their relationship is very sweet and innocent. The friends that "Tris" aka Beatrice had made during initiations were great also. I really liked Will the best. He was sweet and I was kind of hoping for a romance with him and Tris, but oh well! In Conclusion.... I would suggest for anyone whom loves dystopians to read this book. I think that I have wanted to read this book for a while and I built it up so much in my head that when I finally read it, it was not as fantastic to me anymore. I am not sure, but I will be reading the next book, Insurgent, when it comes out in May. “I might be in love with you." He smiles a little. "I'm waiting until I'm sure to tell you, though.”
Even though I do enjoy the Seamus Heaney translation, this one will always remain my favorite. This version has a lyrical quality Heaney's version, I feel, doesn't quite match.
I loved the philosophical side and discussions of religions in this book. I didn't expect that in this book and found it interesting and it has a twist at the end. Fun read.

This was a really good read. It is spotty but the portions that hit meet did so powerfully.
