Highly imaginative best describes this kind of book. If I could upload the cover with its giant eagle-riding warrior, I'd post it on this site--and do intend to. Sword and sorcery comic from South America. Beautiful black and white illustrations by Alcatena chronicle an episode in the adventures of Bask Deavregaut, whose escape from a pecadillo is thwarted by his encounter with the enormous wheeled Fortress. It's like a giant armed locomotive manned by slaves and warriors whose sole purpose is to avenge the cuckolding of Emir Basileo by the "War God" Phradis. In his attempt to escape the fortress, Bask rises up from slaving in the engine room to manning the cannon. The landscape the fortress moves through is filled with weird totems and ruins; there's a crazy battle involving creature-dirigibles and always frame after frame of strange beings in perplexing attire, anthropomorphic buildings that could be alive. The copyright was from the late 80s--yet this very day, some guy on my commute noticed I was reading it. "I've heard of that, is it any good?" Find it. Buy it. I'll have to settle for borrowing my copy from the library. I'll do it, repeatedly.

I've seen other point/counter point books on faith/God, but this one surprised me with its readability, depth (not philosophical), and grit. Beautiful editing that does not gloss over feelings, rough edges, etc. Also, the writers are from different worlds, yet connect well: college history professor (Christian) and punk rock star with PH.D. in Zoology (atheist/naturalist).
this is probably more important than "the new earth". stuff i already knew but needed to be reminded of in order to live a more serene life.

Although morel led the war to get belgium and ultimately King Leopold I out of the Congo Free State (Formerlly Zaire, Currently the Democratic Republic of the Congo), his prejeduces, although "well-menat" are still horrific and his presumptions preposterous. However this is all hindsight, and Morel did the best he could within the time period and the knowledge available to him.
I had just pulled into the carpool line to pick up my son, when horror of horrors, I realized I had forgotten to bring anything to read along. So, I reached in back and decided to read whatever book I my hand first touched. This was it. I can't say I was totally thrilled by it, but I did read it through to see where the author went with the story. My main problem with most of the chick lit that I have read (which isn't much) is the self indulgence of the characters. I've read better; I've read worse, so to speak. Interesting in that the story actually unfolds from three different perspectives, and that the author has momentary sparks of humor (the cat formerly known as prince, as one example)
Not a story for the faint of heart - and not exactly a feel-good read. If that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere. If you're looking for an expertly-written tale of family, society, sacrifice and forgiveness, then look no further. Couldn't put it down.

This is my least favorite of all the Stephanie Plum books. All of these books are stupid, but they usually all make me laugh out loud numerous times. This one just didn't.

An eyeblink away from 5 stars and joining the list of my 'all-time-favorites'. My belief is that some books are just too good a story to be easily told and even a few minor flaws leaves the reader needing a bit more than was delivered. The Prestige is very close to this group. Combing many of my favorite leisure time reading elements - Gothic/Victorian/Edwardian backdrops, English setting and storyline, the hint of science gone astray, and a few historic figures wrapped into the tale; this story delivers on the suspense level marvelously. You gentle reader, know from the opening paragraph that something is coming. Is it wicked or sordid? Malevolent or macabre? Does it matter? In the end, with this book, it does not. A feud that will not be resolved ( ever we learn ), the desires of men mixed and confused with needs both real and invented, spread across and illustrated by the theatrical world of the stage magician, this makes a deliberately ensnaring read. The reader is inexorably drawn, cajoled, and even cheated at points to continue to carry on with absorbing the elements of the story. Human nature in a murky form plays out over a century that has the reader in disbelief only a part of the time. Just like a good magic show. Misdirection and subterfuge are subtle tools employed by Christopher Priest to relay his story. The ending of this story of grasping for power and 'prestige' both has a haunting quality of eternal continuation that leaves the reader hanging in a final moment of uncompleted horror, but not without purpose. My preference for a different impact in the ending is, as mentioned, the prime flaw I had with this book. I will still read it again and strongly recommend it to any one who like any or all of the elements that frame this unique story. - - - - - - - - - * EXTRA * The movie that is a companion to this book is a different story. They are related thematically and in certain scenic elements. For purposes of successful translation to the screen major changes were made to the whole of the story. The movie of The Prestige is also one of my favorites, if for different reasons. Still set in the same time, many identical elements both in mechanism and 'moral' theme, the book and film diverge. If you read or see one, you must consume the other as a companion. They uncharacteristically complement each other as few books and film treatments ever have. And the film has a great cast and is of the highest product value. May 3, 2009
the alarming thing about this book is that it is printed with unusually small printing (i encountered this with a text book once-- it was really long and the print was really small-- i assume to save money on paper)--- this is scary-- i'd have to give up books and read on kindle if all the publishers started doing this.
