Emilie always writes great stories. My only complaint about this one is he didn't grovel enough for me. But it's well worth buying and reading.

This was a realistic story overall, and a good portrayal of a dysfunctional family. Katie's family is falling apart, especially her older brother. Her dad is a psychiatrist who works all the time, and her mother is an alcoholic. Her brother is diagnosed as schizophrenic, and as the story continues, his mental illness grows. Her parents send her to boarding school as a result, where she begins as a sophomore. In order to fit in, she tells everyone at the school "an untruth," and they conclude that her brother is dead. She doesn't correct them, and no one knows her secret except for her roommate Mazzie - not her boyfriend, Drew, or any of the girls in her close circle of friends. Katie is a talented swimmer, and she feels like the only place she can be herself and truly is breathe is when she is in the water. When she is a senior, things begin to fall apart and she has to deal with the consequences of her actions. I enjoyed the book, but it felt a little long in places. I'm glad the author tried to demonstrate the results of teen actions and family dysfunction, without it feeling preachy, and I think the family connection throughout all the illness was well done. My favorite character was Mazzie, by far.

Joel makes fun of me for reading this stuff but I'm wildly entertained by witty puns, both good and bad. Jasper Fforde's novels overflow with these (some might say ad nauseam).
Another charming and witty book by Shannon Hale. :)
listened to the audio version of this--fell in love with it (and major pettigrew) instantly.

I really wish I could give half stars... i'd make it 4.5.
this was the first book of moore's that i read. it was several years ago, and the only work in that library of moore's so i never followed up on his other stuff, but it was a big part of why i picked up his other books when i saw this again. giant man-eating (and truly horny... the damn thing mistakes a gasoline truck for something humpable to his chagrin) chameleon... thing. Again, it's moore's drawing of several outrageous characters together to fight the big threat that makes this fun to sink your teeth into
This book gave me nightmares. It's hard for me to give it more than two stars, because I really couldn't say I liked it. It was well written, but I felt like parts of it were missing. Of course that simply added to the disturbing feeling this book engenders. It is based in the small fictional Eastern European village of Wolfheim, it harkens back to the days and thoughts of Shelley's Modern Prometheus (Frankenstein). I find it hard to like, but also difficult to completely hate Herr Dokter. Monsters, cloning, religion, man's place, the basic nature of humanity all called into question, but the answers here are dark and obscure. It will definitely keep you guessing.
