I really loved these short stories. They were alive and unapologetic. Looking forward to more from Miranda July.

This book has perfectly captured exactly the kind of person I was in junior high school, (and the kind of friends I WISHED I had!) and what it's like to realize you're growing up and there's nothing you can do to stop it. From the book: "...Everything's changing so much. I don't even know how tall I am or what size bra I wear, and when I had that cold last week I got out a Goosebumps book to read, and it was so bad I wondered if somebody had taken the inside away and substituted a different one. "
I spent a lot of the time reading this book trying to decide whether the vocabulary and sentence structure chosen by the author was because the character narrating isn't very bright, or because the author isn't. Once I reached the end, I decided it was the author. I slogged through the novel mostly because it was sent to me through the Early Reviewers program on LibraryThing. ([...])I thought I should give it a decent chance. Handeland's story has three major scenes: Sex, violence, and mythology building. The sex was a big turn-off. It was described in a way that turned my stomach instead of turned me on. The violent action scenes were at least believable. The mythology needs some work. Handeland spends half her time busting myths about fantasy creatures and the other half her time building new ones. From other fantasy books I've read, I've learned that not all vampires can be repelled by crosses and garlic, and I don't mind some minor variation, but none of this author's creatures seem to be anything like ones that have been introduced in other media. It's an ambitious universe and an interesting theory, but this author isn't up to handling it properly. None of the characters in the book were interesting or relatable to me. Also, it seemed as though they did not behave congruently. Few reasons were given for the motivations and actions of these characters, and the reader takes a lot on faith to believe in what they do or say. This is unforgivable in a work of fantasy or paranormal romance. At least if the characters are believable, a lot of unbelievable fantastic things can be accepted. Another thing, and this may be sort of nit-picky, but I really dislike the image of the main character on the cover.

I like the cover of my book better than this one, but i did enjoy the story regardless of the cover. My extended family has many service men in it and it was interesting to get a perspective on that life. I also enjoyed the interaction among the chacters.
These women are hilarious! I couldn't believe some of the things they were saying... so much that I had to read them out loud to my Mom and Dad and we laughed at the blunt language! All that aside, a very good way to look at what you put into your body. I am not vegan and in some parts I felt they were preaching to be vegan or vegetarian... but good read!
Vastly entertaining.

This book was an eye opener to me. I really like how the author describes the city and life in Mexico.
I didn't read the whole book - just the interesting parts. It was helpful in pointing out how to encourage curiosity and other positive traits of smart boys and in giving advice on how to help with the challenges.
