Gisli is my favorite Saga hero, just after Njal and Gunnar. He's very human, and a classic icelandic tragic-hero - outlawed due to no real fault of his own, loved yet harried to his death, which comes after a dramatic, outnumbered showdown.

Although it was a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster, I thought this book was very interesting and would recommend it.

The illustrations in this book are incredible. It's like looking at a beautiful painting on each page. Wonderful story about wolves and what happened to the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park when the wolves were all gone due to hunters. Explains how the wilderness became unbalanced. When wolves were once again reintroduced to Yellowstone, they flourished and grew and so did the grass, and the flowers and the animals around them. Many beautiful wild animals are featured including birds, bears, beavers, elk, moose, bison, mountain sheep and badgers. Great introduction to environmentalism and illustrates why wolves are so important to the eco-system and why they deserve to be protected just like all endangered species (and all animals in general).

Runaways offers something I've been seeking for a long time: the fun of M/M Romance in a Regency setting without the worry of being put to death for the crime of buggery. There's no outright mention of this difference or other fantasy elements in the story; the author deftly weaves the information right in, starting with the opening pages. Megan Derr has a great handle on Regency sensibilities and voice: the responsibilities to one's family and station to marry well, the need to find one's own way, the worry that one isn't worthy of one's beloved, problems of family not approving of one's choice (but in this case, not because the chosen one in male). True to traditional Regency romance style, there is no graphic sex; scenes fade to black with only a hint to the reader that an intimate interlude occurred. The kisses and sexual tension, however, are wonderful. Our two heroes are well drawn, and a secondary established romance adds to the story of these two young men. Overall, an enjoyable read. Apparently the author's story Seconds is of a similar nature, and I'll be reading it soon as well.

Enlightening, inspiring and moving! Dorothy Porter's essay on Passion starts with a profound poem she wrote at seventeen about losing her religion, meanders through literature that inspired and stirred her passion throughout her life and ends with the search for Duende and a soulful saeta. Nietzsche's 'Birth of Tragedy' introduced her to Euripide's Baccae and Dionysian delights whilst Bronte's deep rendering of passion in Wuthering Heights (my all time favorite novel) made her wonder about her inspiration. DH Lawrence's snake poem, Sappho's smatterings on eros, Rimbaud, Donne's erotic longings, Ginsberg's powerful poetry, Hopkins birds, Dostyevsky's Brothers Karamazov, Paglia's Vamps & Tramps, shocking Shakespeare, Lorca's Duende & CP Cavafy's 'The God Abandons Antony' all feature as influences and muses in this rich little dip into the heart and soul of the late great Dorothy Porter.

Yes, I'm one of the adults who loved this series, and finished all 4 of them before my teenage daughter did.
