I usually love Kingsolver's books--Animal Dreams is one of my all-time favorites, and I have read it about 50 times--but this novel was incredibly preachy. Yes, it is better to eat and buy local food. I understand this. However,not all of us have a publisher backing us financially should we decide to move to our second home situated on several acres and devote every waking hour to gardening/canning/cooking. Most of us have to work, thank you very much.

Really good ideas for classroom teachers. Really good. BUT ... I seriously disagree with a basic premise in her class. I mean, it's GREAT if the kids have access to a wonderful library while in her class. It is. But I think she does that to the detriment of encouraging use of school/public libraries. And the kids will have access to those long after they leave her classroom. Anyway. I guess I will just say the main thing is to get kids to read. And she does that.

An interesting story about how we have to live with our choices, even ones that may have taken us down the "wrong" road. The prose was a bit flat at points, and my interest would lag at places though.

I really liked this book because I like the details Andrew Clemnts did. The thing I liked best was Clements didn't just think of what would bee the normal thing in the book. It was different how a child becomes a director of The Holiday Concert. I really liked it!

The big buzz of Summer 2009 for a debut short story collection. I was pleasantly surprised by those stories. While not in love with all of them, there's no denying that Tower is an industrious craftsman, that one of his greatest strength is a profound knowledge of mechanics, and that he has a gift for the freshest imagery and metaphor I've come across in quite a while. Anyone who cares deeply about the short story form has much to learn and savor from this collection.

I read this a while ago, but it definitely made me think more about our foreign policy. I don't agree with everything the author says, but it's an interesting read any the way. It is an interesting story, along the lines of a Robert Bauer/CIA story, and if you like those kinds of books you will appreciate this.
