A useful resource that corrects many of the mistakes in George Stone's 1961 Glossary of the Construction, Decoration, and Use of Arms and Armour. Despite the title it's not actually complete (an impossible task!) but it does make a brave attempt. My only complaints are the reliance on drawings rather than photos, and some overly short entries for items that have a fair amount of information available. I can understand the first editorial choice as one simply to save money. Hiring an illustrator to copy photos is much cheaper than paying for permissions to reproduce so many photos. My second criticism is a bit more serious. For example, the entry for the ahlspiess is only about 70 words long, while much more is known about this weapon. Given the vast scope of this book, I guess they had to put a limit on length somewhere! These are minor criticisms. This is an excellent work that must have taken a vast amount of research. Well done. If you have deep pockets, I'd suggest also buying Stone's book too, for the hundreds of photos and his deep knowledge of Asian weapons. If you can only buy one, buy The Complete Encyclopaedia of Arms and Weapons.
"Dream Angus" is one of a series of books published by Canongate that are re-workings of traditional myths from around the world by contemporary authors. We read the Penelopead by Margaret Atwood for book club and were all extremely disappointed. But I really enjoy Alexander McCall Smith, and liked "Dream Angus" a lot. Maybe just because it focuses on a Celtic god (or son of a god), Angus is a dreamgiver/eros figure. McCall Smith intersperses his retelling of Angus's life with situations where modern characters are influenced by Angus's power. This works well because it's not cheesily done, and the paralells are subtle. I also like McCall Smith's writing style for being just simple enough: The pigs could not tolerate such uncertainty, such fear. They moved from their village, leaving behind the houses they had made, leaving the abundant nuts, the well-worn paths through their village, all their memories. From the top of a nearby hill, people watched the pigs run behind their leader, a stream of excited squealing, a river of bristle; and then there was just the sound of birdsong and the rustling of the leaves like dice.

I am not sure how I feel about this book. A young student at school recommended this book to me so I read it because I'd asked her for a recommendation. I kept thinking that after I finished it, I would not read any other books in the series. However, I finished this last night and I think I'll have to read book 2.
This book taught me how to look inside myself to find what I truly want from life. Donald Miller is witty, and this approach to some of life's greater obstacles makes them seem less daunting. The book leaves you with a longer to discover meaning in your life, and it makes you hunger for what Miller has found. Amazing.

Wow. Ouch. Gorgeous. Horrible. I've read other things by de Bernieres, but this really takes the writing cake. It's graphic and real without being gratuitous, it's gentle and lovely without getting cheesy or cloying, it's epic while still being about small things. It is not a read for those with a weak stomach or weak heart. But if you can go there and experience this book, you most certainly should.
Beautifully written. As soon as my nephew and niece are old enough to read this great book, they will be receiving it as either birthday or Christmas presents.

A loving, human ode to war and folly.
A fun and clever play on the standard fantasy adventure trope. Jig the goblin, cleverer than your average goblin, accidentally falls in with a group of adventurers on a standard-issue fantasy quest. Tongue-in-cheek humor, good action, and a good old-fashioned dungeon-crawl.

Sometimes when I find books like this I wish I had children.. almost! I can't wait to throw my future daughter(s) a fairy party with butterfly cupcakes, fairy fudge, Iced Raspberry Mousse, and Marzipan Toadstools! Adding this to the menu for Martha Stewart's pixie party and the party would be magical!

I enjoyed this YA book. The main character, Terra, has a port-wine stain on her face and this book follows her on her discovery of who she is and what true beauty is. I would have given it 4 stars except the author overused the map analogy throughout (Terra's father is a cartographer), but I did enjoy learning about geocaching.
