The story appears to be set in the near future in a post-apocalyptic world (it is never quite revealed if this is the case or not). The main character is a teenage girl named Saba. She witnesses the murder of her only surviving parent, the father, as well as the kidnapping of her twin brother. Although she still has a younger sister Emmi, she feels that her life is nothing without her twin brother. Ms. Young does an admirable job in describing the wasteland environment in addition to the guilt and feelings of worthlessness of Saba. Saba appears to hate her younger sister and feels guilty over this at times but she overcomes her feelings of worthlessness as she learns to fight, literally and figuratively, for her survival. She eventually escapes imprisonment and uses her fighting skills to locate and rescue her brother. During her struggles she connects with a number of memorable characters, including a love interest. Ms. Young presents an intriguing tale that can be enjoyed, in my opinion, by many although geared towards young adults. The only drawback I found was in the intentionally misspelled words. It was also somewhat difficult to determine the correct pronunciation of names, such as Lugh (the twin brother). Does his name rhyme with Hugh or is it something quite different? Minor grievances to be sure, but for me it distracted from the story. All things considered, this was a well written, thought provoking and stirring tale of a young woman's discovery of her worth, not only to herself but to others.
This book delves into the desire and pursuit of wealth and where it can lead. But it is ultimately very, very tragic--and that's why I didn't like it.

I was really interested in the story behind this story and because of that story it is hard to say anything less than glowing about the actual novel, that said I didn't love it. Just as I was getting into it, was able to keep track of the characters and wanted to know more about them, the first part ended and the second had a whole new set of characters. Probably all of the stories would have come together at the end, which was never written. In this case you are left wanting more, not because that is how the author intended but because of she was taken prisoner and sent to her death at a concentration camp before she finished.
read it in an english class
Best book of the year. It's that simple. The characters were fantastic, the plot was original and captivating. AND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A YA novel that didn't have a love triangle!!!!! YEAH!!!! This book just proves that you don't need a love triangle to create drama and suspense. This book was amazing and it has been in my mind ever since the day I read it. I keep going back to read my favourite parts in this book, and trust me, there are many! Veronica Roth is an inspiring awesome writer and I can't wait to read the next book in this series and anything else she writes!

The setting is a young priest sent to work on a native american reservation in the pacific northwest. Once you get past the implausible set-up (i.e., young priest is terminally ill, but will be healthy and symptom-free for two years; doctor tells the priest's SUPERVISOR/bishop this diagnosis but hides it from the priest), it is a pleasant story about friendships that develop across cultures. There isn't a lot of action - it's more just a slice of life - but the characters are strong enough to hold interest. I also liked the fact that the priest is portrayed as just a regular guy who wants to be good at his work. While there will always be spectacularly evil religious leaders in the news, there are still some who just live their faith and do their jobs.
One of my favorite books! Loved her descriptions of Tuscany and its residents. Definitely my favorite of di Blasi's.
