I waited for years to read this book, because like every other popular book out there, I am skeptical of the hype. "The Poisonwood Bible" blew my mind...due to the fact that this Kingsolver book was terrible. A family of missionaries from Mississippi head over to the Congo just before the country claims its independence from Belgium. The father is a crazy fundamentalist, abusive, insensitive man. The mother is a weakling who is selectively caring towards her children, and doesn't have the guts to stand up to her spouse. And the four girls are at times whiny, week, boring, and flat characters. The trouble with "The Poisonwood Bible" is that each chapter is broken down into the voice of one of the five female voices (never the father's) and there is never any true character development throughout the entire novel. Even after the climax of the story (which takes more than 300 pages to get to), the story of how the women live after the two big developments (see, not giving anything away!) is lackluster and shows that the characters still are one dimensional cut-outs of what missionary kids should look like. I read somewhere that Kingsolver pretty much forced herself to eek out these characters from the ground and they fought her the whole way. Well, it shows. The novel is preachy (all kidding aside), flat, and entirely too long. This novel felt like the least honest piece of work I've read in a long time and my suggestion to anyone wanting to read this Kingsolver is to move on to "Prodigal Summer" if you haven't already read it. But just skip this one all together, it's not worth the hype.
