Mike is an amazing individual. I've read three of his books--Patience, Shopping Texas by Mail and Vintage Postcards. What you don't know about Mike until reading 'patience' is that he is a survivor of polio at the age of 9! He's now 63 and sleeps each night in an iron lung and can only type/write with his left foot or pencil in his mouth. But don't pity him. He doesn't ask for that. Look at how he's lived life to the fullest and touched so many lives in his wheelchair. He's a gift of God and an amazing writer.

Who is ill? The lunatic inhabitants or the head of hospital?

This Bildungsroman of Marcelo Sandoval takes place in the summer between his junior and senior years of high school. He is somewhere on the Autism spectrum, though his place has never really been nailed down. Having planned to work with the ponies at Paterson (his school), Marcelo is thrown for a loop when his father, Arturo, has him work in the mailroom at Arturo's law firm instead. While there, he is finding his way in "the real world." This world involves a complex set of rules, emotions, and difficult choices for Marcelo to discover and understand. Wonderfully told, the story really takes off about a third or more of the way in, when Marcelo is going to discover he has quite a choice to make. Whose rules will he follow? The two knocks I have against this book is that it did take a while to get going, and is likely to drop some readers along the way because of that. Also, I find it hard to believe the narrator is on the Autism spectrum. It's not that his actions and words don't make sense with that, but the way the novel is written is clearly by an experienced author, and not someone with Autism or Asperger's. I suppose that's a compliment to Francisco X. Stork as an author, but I just had a hard time believing this as a first-person book.

Inspired me to record what I read. I noticed that most of Hornby's books are by male authors.

A toothsome story wherein nearly every word of nearly every sentence was a new delight. Does that sound vague? It does sound vague, doesn't it? I'm sorry but don't imagine that it's any reflection on this perfect Pearl. Marias does not do vague. He makes specificity a literary virtue.

Has anyone read this? I would love to discuss. I found the writing compelling but the story failed to move.

okay manage to finish it!? whew... and if you read some of Judith McNaught books you can simply say this book lacks... errr yeah well i wasn't that bored but then the story really lacks an appeal---i think Diana's character is really nice , such a shame Judith McNaught wasn't able to really pull it off, with Cole's character and romantic development really needs improvement haha oh well the beginning is quite promising but... it losses along the way... well maybe because i didn't felt that Cole was really into Diana! huh? well he didn't really said "i love you" or i did i miss it? goody, that bad? errr haha awwww anyway i didn't regret reading it, hmmmm though it somehow bothers me in a way that with little adjustment here and there, i mean the heroine, supporting character are okay, the plot is something... Judith McNaught known for having this "big problem" that leaves the both character within reach yet far apart in having each other which somehow heartbreaking-ly romantic when they get to be each other in the end!? peace! special citation: L.V. okay... the Louis Vuitton scene was hilarious haha tsk.. tsk.. haha ;D

Now, this was a lot of fun--and I'm not even much of a zombie fan.

This is a good story and great characters, but it is marred by really repetitive writing in Lizzie's internal dialogue and reactions to things. Just needed a good thorough editing to make it great. I'd give it 3.5 stars. This was the most mature of the 3 Queen of Babble books, and definitely my favorite.
