An overlooked Steinbeck classic. A collection of short stories that, in a modernist/magical-realist touch, depicts a small rural California community.

adult reading except that my pre-teens love the whole series, as do I great heroine great historical-type fiction great fun the audio book was excellent
A well-written, meticulously-crafted mystery, as well as a sometimes funny, sometimes uncomfortable meditation on aging. A very clever concept (the aged Sherlock Holmes takes a case in 1940s London) executed beautifully. Overall, I was more interested in the novel as an exercise and wasn't necessarily drawn deeply into the story. Still, a good read.
I enjoyed this book. I found it to be depressing but very inspiring. The parents of these 4 children were completely selfish and cared nothing about their welfare at times. I have read a lot of other peoples reviews and they are so negative in regards to the parents. Although they were selfish they also taught them many life lessons and if you remember throughout the book these children were so bright and educated due to their parents teaching them at a young age. What an insuring book though! After all the hardships the children encountered they grow up to be strong individuals. I would read this book again and encourage others to as well.

I really loved this story until I got to the end and then I strongly disliked the WHOLE thing! One of my favorite Latin phrases comes from this book: sin cera. Between this book and Da Vinci Code, I'm totally disenchanted with Dan Brown.

I've started a bit hesitant on the few first chapters of this book, which is the time it took for the plot to get clearer, but then I really, really got into the story! I was advised this book because I like humor/fantasy a la Pratchett, and although it's no parody like a Pratchett book, I definitely laughed out aloud more than once :) A lot of characters were really interesting and funny (the Demons being my favs :P), and I actually liked most of the female cast, which doesn't happen often for me! Chapters are numerous but short, which sets a nice dynamic, and the author favors dialogs which was just fine with me too. I would have liked a bit more of character description, but that's pretty much it. I gladly recommand it, especially to girls as the main crew is female, but it has enough action, fun and fight to please guys too. Definitely a good read :)
A brilliant book, one of my favorites. It's impressive that it's written by a man. It's very well-written, so much so that I can easily imagine everything that's happening in my mind, like a movie.
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time and my favorite book by a hungarian author.

Heartbreakingly good book, especially givent he time of my life and being in a loveless relationship. I enjoy De Botton's clinical style of writing and how he is still able to convey such emotion.
