Another book from my childhood that I LOVED. I'm going to have to think about whether or not to give it to Sam yet - she could definitely read it but part of the story is about someone who goes away to war and dies. He has 3 children so I think that it would make Sam sad - I'll either wait a little or find a way to prepare her for it. In those situations I remind her it's a story and sometimes to make the story really good people have to find ways to get rid of some people so they normally kill them off because it's an easy way to just write that character out.

This was a book for a day. I was happy to read it. I don't think I'll recommend to everyone. Marilynne Robinson has a blurb on the cover and this book would be interesting to her. I found it nice in it's stream of consciousness quality. But, that's me. I don't insist I always know what's going on. Perhaps this is my problem in life.

The plot of this novel is best summarized by its extended title: "The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders, Etc. Who was born in Newgate, and during a life of continu'd Variety for Threescore Years, besides her Childhood, was Twelve Year a Whore, five times a Wife (whereof once to her own brother), Twelve Year a Thief, Eight Year a Transported Felon in Virginia, at last grew Rich, liv'd Honest and died a Penitent. Written from her own Memorandums." More specifically, Moll's life started off tragically for when she was born she was immediately given to a nurse by whom she was raised. Moll's mother was convicted of a petty felony when she was pregnant and was sent to a Virginia plantation right after Moll was born. When Moll's nurse dies, Moll is sent to live with a prominent family where she learns how to be a "gentlewoman" along side the daughters of the family. She then falls in love with one of the sons in the family and becomes his mistress. When Moll is jilted by her lover, she is forced to marry his brother. This is her first marriage in a long line of tragic marriages and failed relationships. Though this story had more substance than Fanny Hill, I was a bit disappointed because it was written 30 years after Fanny Hill yet there were few improvements made to the story. While Fanny Hill was more crude and sexually explicit, Moll Flanders was more character driven. Still, there are few difference between the two. Both women are naive and deceived by the world in such a way that causes them to act in immoral ways in order to survive. Though this is exciting at first and both women appear almost adventurous, it gets tedious. I think Sedaris is funny to begin with, so not suprisingly I enjoyed this book. He is clever, snide, cynical, all the things I admire most in people. I think he's laugh-out-loud funny, and not many people make me behave like that. Get it, read it, if you hate it then give it to someone else, I'll bet they'll like it.

** spoiler alert ** ** 5 Stars ** Spoilers all sorts of ahead! It took me 3 books to truly like this series. I can honestly say I finished this book in like 4 hours today and loved it! While books 1 and 2 left some plot and depth to be desired, book 3 delivers. This book showed emotional depth that the first two books lacked for me. Merit has grown leaps and bounds. She still holds true to her oaths to Ethan and Cadogan even while being tempted to go a different route. She is being trained to fight by Ethan now and he pushes her to the boundaries. She grows as a soldier, but can't seem to resist Ethan's pull. There relationships grows substantially, and then falls apart. I liked Ethan. I HATED Ethan. Then I finally sort of respected Ethan. He is torn between putting his own desires first or putting Cadogan before all else. We learn a little about his origins. Shifters play a role in this story. It is nice seeing that part of the "sups" society. Merit just has truly come into her own in this story. While I felt like the plot wasn't that great in the last 2 books... this one had more action. Then when I thought the story arc had basically concluded.. there was a little more action. It took basically the entire book for Merit and Mallory to pull there crap back together. I'm glad they did. They have an amazing dynamic. Lindsay has also become a fast favorite of mine. She socializes Merit more. She and Luc are hilarious! All in all: I laughed, I teared up. I squealed. I covered my face with the book and giggled like a teenager at a Justin Bieber concert. I now officially can say "I am definitely a fan of the Chicagoland vampire series"!!! Ethan's declaration at the end made it all worth while!
