The story sounds so sick - brother and sister falling in love with each other back in a little village in Greece and decide to ship over to US and pretend to be a married couple when they arrive. Even more weird what happens to their grandchild. BUT all these oddities make this a really charming family narrative and just makes you remember that every family has its own story to tell. We are what we are because of all the things that happened in the past.

Imagine Tom Clancy's books, but written by a good writer with big ideas and a conscience. Le Carre reminds me of Graham Greene, and this is a tremendous compliment. He has that same not-quite-cynical but very sober view of mankind. Tough story, well told.

Oh, Esther, how I can relate to your descent in to madness! How your story of the fig tree makes perfect sense to so many! How glad I am that I did not go quite THAT MAD.
The book examines the very subjective nature of what we feel is a good price for the items we want or need. The chapters that dealt with tangible items, such as a cup of specialty coffee, were more interesting to me than the chapters on the intangibles. The book truly delves into "everything," as the title promises. But the chapters on the price of marriage, polygamy, happiness, democracy, faith, and so on were not as intriguing - again, to me.

This is my first book by Andre Dubus III but it won't be the last. After reading this very personal and often suspenseful memoir, I will venture into Dubus's fiction. Having lived in the area he grew up in made it all the more interesting. But I didn't know that Newburyport was such a rough town in the '70s. I will certainly try some of his dad's stories also.

This is a fun read about this author's version of "American Idol" and how a small town bands together to help the underdog local girl become a contender in the final five on the show. This author imparts a lot of wisdom and I really enjoyed her writing. Some of my favorite lines include..."It's easy to mind your own business when someone else's business looks like too much trouble." My favorite line is "Sometimes it ain't the drunk or the sinner who needs a shovel across the rear, it's the ones who could quote you chapter and verse about grace, but don't hand it out." Reminds me of some people I know...
Starts things off beautifully....

The story of a clerk in a massive government center that stores all the names of the living, and all the names of the dead... This book was just wonderful.
One of the worlds oldest Cinderella stories. Some aspects of the classic tale are really different. Cinderella is Greek in Egyptian society. She does not attend any ball or party. A falcon steals her shoe and drops it at the ball. The prince finds it and is enthralled by it. He is determined to marry its owner. Cinderella's winning ability is her skill at dancing. I am not sure this is too culturally accurate, perhaps one day I shall find out.
