Funny as are all of Anne Tyler's books. I particularly liked the interaction between the two different kinds of mothers - the bohemian mom who has very set ideas about how children should be raised (and believes everyone should do it her way) and the first-generation American mom who is trying to raise her foreign-born child to be American amidst conflicting influences of her own and her child's native heritage, as well as do's and don'ts from those around her.

Having read so many dysfuntional family sagas, this was a tough one to get through but needed to read it for bookclub. It kept my interest and the ending completely surprised me which resulted in a higher rating than I originally thought I would give it. The author did a great job of capturing Carrie's "voice" and conveying the hopelessness of the poor southern way of life.

As always, I love the Big Nate books. This one still gets 5 stars, even if it wasn't quite as wonderful as the first two. It didn't have as much of a moral to the story as the others had, but it was still a great read. I still prefer it to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books as I like Nate better as a character. I have no problems recommending this to any child.
