Roald Dahl has a great trust in his readers. He has a fantastic talent for breaking off from his stories at just the right point to let you imagine something bizarre and delicious to go along with the build up, so that there's almost never an anti-climax. This collection is full of petty, terrible people enacting (or failing to enact) weird vengences and crazy get-rich-quick schemes and impossible inventions. Hilarious and unnerving; I'll be giving people the side-eye for days.
Well, I didn't think this book was all that great in high school, and I think I like it even less now. Huck Finn is no hero; he's a big fat jerk! At least the story moved along for about half the book, but then it dragged. And when Tom Sawyer appeared on the scene, forget it. From that point to the ending, I had a really hard time "enjoying" the story. What the hell, Tom Sawyer? He and his harebrained schemes are ten times worse than Huck. I wanted to punch something upon finishing this book. What can I say, picking apart books in high school ruins them forever. Or maybe this is simply a crappy book.

This book is actually very excellent, but it is SO DEPRESSING that I could not convince myself to give it four stars.
Well, like several other reviewers of this book, I went to the library to find the book "The Help" and spotted "The Keep" first. I read the blurb on the back and was intrigued. It is not the kind of book I usually read, but I'd also heard of the author, so I thought I'd give it a try. (Later, I continued to looke for "The Help" but found no copies yet.) I found it intriguing and it kept my interest. I liked the main character Danny, who travels to Europe to help a cousin refurbish an old castle he has bought. There is a past between Danny and his cousin Howard, where a childhood prank left its mark. There is a second story within this story of an inmate in a writing class who is writing this story of Danny and Howard. I didn't warm up to the inmate like I had to Danny, but I kept at it and finished the book. Found it absorbing and I've been thinking about it quite a lot since.

I probably read this at least 15 years ago and I still consider it one of my favorites. The story was great, the characters so vivid that it seemed as though I knew them and for months my favorite expression when stumped or surprized was "Boy, howdy!".

This sequel to House of Dreams, also known as Lady of the Reeds, was actually written as a response to the overwhelming reader popularity of the character of Thu in the previous book. Gedge herself wrote that she had thought Thu’s story finished, but Thu proved so popular with readers that she decided to bring her back. Since in the previous book Thu unhistorically survives, the door was left open for a sequel, and here it is. Since in real life Ramesses III, Thu and Pentaweres were all actually killed as a result of the harem plot, I almost prefer to think of this particular book as indulgent pure fiction merely set in a historical setting. Gedge tells the story in first person, and switches between three different character perspectives in three distinct sections, which is a change from her usual style, but it works in this case. It allows the plot to unfold at the right pace and maintain the tension, whilst keeping a good deal of mystery involved. I say this every time about Gedge’s style of writing and use of language, but she’s just so consistent with it; the writing is nuanced, evocative, and subtle, and I found myself totally engrossed and reading House of Illusions was a truly enjoyable experience. It seems that some readers were rather switched off by the ending though. (view spoiler) The success of the pharaohs depended on their ruthlessness and decisiveness, in the harsh, unforgiving world of the bronze age. Pharaoh’s justice was supreme and his/her word was law. The historian in me is totally calling that one out. I’m gonna have to knock a point off for that, but ultimately I can let it go. This book is comfort food, if you will. It’s a complete fictional sequel written after Gedge wrote the tragedy of the historical Thu and the first book proved so popular, I don’t see too much harm in revisiting these characters and seizing the chance to give them a satisfying ending. As usual Gedge writes so sublimely that it feels like it could be real, if I didn’t know the historical facts that the harem conspiracy ended otherwise, and at the end of the day that’s what really matters to me when I’m looking for a good book. I don’t have anything more to say, really. I feel like I keep repeating the same things in my reviews for Pauline Gedge, about the flair and imagination of her writing, the depth of her characters, her detailed and nuanced understanding of ancient Egypt – but she’s just so consistently excellent that the same comments about quality apply to every book of hers I read! 9 out of 10

there's bound to be some good stuff in there, but Tim Ferriss is too much of a self-important showoff douchebag to enjoy what he's trying to share.

The novel Sula, is a very unique and complex story. There are multiple life lessons in this book that one can take to better or analyze his or her life. Sula intrested me because of the authors way of writing. The stories told within Sula may sometimes be seen as a bit odd but in the end, there was always a lesson to it or main point. Sula is the main character of the book, and the one that intrigued me the most. Throughout the book Sula's faces alot of issues and problems in her life, she shows the reality of people and their true feelings, and of how one should care and love themselves.Sula may have taken many risks, and may have done things that others may consider heartless or without moral, but Sula always had a reason within eveything that she did, but the world was not aware of that, this was one of her best and worse qualities. Though she considers herself a good person most people around her seemed to think other wise, everyone but her friend Nel. I would recommend Sula to everyone because novel has yet to be one of the most interesting novels i have read. It will take you on a journey, and challenge you to think in a higher level, for everything is not as they appear, Sula was a great example of just that.
