I own't waste time telling you what this book is about, you should already know because there's a description right there when you click on the title of the book. What I will tell you is what this book did/did not do for me. 1. It made me think about what makes me think someone is ugly. Like when I look at someone, what in my mind decides whether the person is pleasant looking or ugly. Also, how can two people see the same person and one person thinks they are cute and the other person says no, they are ugly. 2. It did not excite me. There was too much focus on romance and not enough action. I don't mind romantic dystopian novels but when the romance overtakes the action... I find myself just wanting to get the book over with. It is not a bad book, it just lacked the same excitement I have felt with other dystopian books like Hunger Games. So, it was just okay for me.

Although Gladwell restates things that most thinking people already know, he does so in a clear and simple way, which makes fairly important social concepts accessible to the general public.

This is an awfully active town, given that the population is < 2000, but still plausible. I figured out some of the mystery before the end. Good enough for me to read some other Monona Quinn mysteries.
Best book ever!!!!!

seriously, i don't get the hype. although this is extremely well-written and has a few bright spots, most of the time it felt like a chore to read. if you enjoy a narrative in the style of a history book, complete with lengthy footnotes, this may be up your alley.

Hmmm...I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this book. It's basically a folk tale with lots of stories (folk tales) told to explain the folk tale. It's pretty deep, mostly narrative with very little conversation, which isn't my preferred style. The fact that it took me a week to read tells you something of my week, but also tells something of my ability to put it down. This author is young and has had a great deal of hype...and while she is very skilled, I can't say I love her style of writing.
Part sci-fi “first contact” story, part murder mystery, part chronicle of one man’s exaltation and complete devastation, this book utterly captivated me. I fell in love with the characters, perhaps the more so because you learn at the outset that they have all (but one) mysteriously died. The story weaves between the present and the past with a gripping, yet graceful, pace. The narration is compelling without being melodramatic, despite the subject material. (My only technical gripe would be the author’s habit of having the viewpoint drift in and out of different character’s minds in the same scene, which I find distracting.) Put together like a finely cut jigsaw puzzle, the story unfolds one tantalizing detail after another.
