I generally pass on novels with multiple authors. However, the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child partnership is a mystery to me. Together, their trashy airport thrillers are actually not bad at all for the genre. Yet on their own, these guys deserve a special section in the Dan Brown wing of the Museum of God-Awful American Writing. I assumed after Douglas Preston's word-poop "The Codex" (listened to this driving up to Yosemite) that Lincoln Child was the decent author in the Preston/Child partnership. "Death Match", about a super-computer that optimizes online dating, disproved this theory in a big way. The book started out OK but devolved, Stephen King-like, into a trite, completely predictable mess toward the end. Much of "Death Match" was suspiciously similar to the earlier, also weak Preston/Child collaboration "Mount Dragon". At least Child is safe from plagiarism charges on this one, though his crimes against people stuck on a Southwest Airlines flight with only one book (ie. me) remain unanswered.
Loving this! Lauren read it 3x!
This was a nice casual read about a Miss Alabama facing a not-so-perfect world much later in life as a real estate agent. Written in the near present, includes references to cell phones and Obama as President. Includes a heroine midget and an evil competitor. Former Miss Alabama gets tired of trying to please everybody and implements a plan to do something about it.
I got online this morning and checked my e-mail to discover the dreaded news...Robert Asprin had died. Now, I love a bunch of his books, specifically, The Cold Cash War, The Bug Wars, and Phule's Company. As I was taking my car to get new tires put on, I knew I would be doing nothing so I bought a book...this one. And, wow! It was absolutely great! I love the concept of something so fantastical as dragons (which normally I have no love for) being used in a modern way. And best of all, you like the characters. They are well flashed out and you find yourself rooting for them...all the while trying to figure out who the enemy is and what is coming. Great stuff. And now, there is no chance for a sequel. With that in mind...pick this book up. And enjoy one final story by Asprin.
Sixteen year-old Pi is shipwrecked on his way to North America and trapped on a life-boat with a bengal tiger, a wounded zebra, a hyena and an orangutan. The story weaves in and out of flashbacks and dreamscapes, calling upon the political climate in India in the 1950s as well as exploring themes of Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. There is a bit of stream of consciousness, not in the writing style, but in the experience of the main character. This was an amazing read.
Oh Mr. Helsel, my AP US History teacher LOVED this book. I wish I could say the same, but it wasn't half bad as high school history books go.

Another one of my favorite boks. You need an open mind and an open bottle of wine to fully experience this novel.

Chronological account of civil rights in America. Anyone who has "decided to give a shit" has much to gain from this book...
