** spoiler alert ** It was pretty good. Patterson left a lot of things hanging, though. Like, who WAS Mr. Chu? We know he was this bad guy who didn't want the CSM to promote their theories about global warming and stuff, and he kindnapped Max's mom, but who was he affiliated with? How did he know about Max and the flock? We never really understand much about Mr. Chu. Plus the story came to a sort-of abrubt ending. Do Total and Akila get married? The adventure can't stop where it did, either. Surely someone else is going to plot against the flock. We don't know what happens in their future. Do they all settle down with Dr. Martinez? What about Max and Fang ('Fax' from now on.)? Do they get married? Have kids? What are their kids like? And are they live births, or eggs? Do they have wings? What about Angel? There is definately something special about her, even more so than her cool abilities. Enough questions and criticism. It was a good book overall, I liked the basic plot line and how Max mouths off to the Navy officials...LOL
The first half of the book is great. It gives a very accessible and somewhat intuitive introduction to relativity and quantum mechanics, and why new theories are needed. The second half is just name dropping and throwing around words in a way that, if you don't already know the people or know the words, is pointless.

This is actually my third time reading Critical Race Theory. A hard book to get your head around. I definitely wrestle with some of the book's premises. It has good points but tends to generalize and marginalize some voices. A good start but too many flaws in my opinion.

There was not enough analysis in this book for me. I understand the need to write things quickly, during a time of crisis, when you need to start important conversations about controversial things. But I thought, in general, that her arguments here lacked rigor.

I really, really loved this book! Lately I seem to have really embraced the "food" genre - ranging from books on growing to cooking to eating food and the role that food plays in both our physical and emotional health. JULIE AND JULIA is a great addition to the shelf. It reminds me a bit of EAT, PRAY, LOVE, but without all the self-righteousness and religious stuff. I liked that book a lot, but JULIE AND JULIA is much more my (snarky) style. I can totally relate to the author, an early-thirty-something trying to find a meaning in her life once she hits that post-20's "you mean, this is it?" realization. Julie Powell manages to get through that existential crisis by finding a new purpose in channeling Julia Child and spending a year conquering some really intimidating recipes. Perhaps I'm doing a bit of the same by trying to find more control and substance in my own life through cooking and, hopefully soon, growing healthier food. (And hopefully I'll find an Eric of my own someday!) Plus, Julie Powell endeared herself to me completely in the cheesy end pages of the paperback edition, once you get through the reading group guide and the usual interview with the author. She gives a list of other books that might be of interesting, and they include the usual cookbooks and biographies of Julia Child. But there, at the very end, she reveals herself to be not only a diehard fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer but also a devotee of Max Brooks and his Zombie books! She's like my soul sister. :-)
