I'm listening to this on audio book. It's quite pleasant as a way of passing the miles, but it seems a little hit and miss. I don't much care for the smug main character, Henry, who seems to be more suited to an action adventure story than a love story. Low point so far: the unintentionally hilarious account of the death of Henry's mom.

The introduction and preface will take you longer to read than the actual book itself. Don't be fooled by it's size though, there's plenty of ideas to reflect on. The preface alone draws a number of similarities between Al Ghazali and other philosophers. Who knew Ghazali questioned reason itself and became a sceptic hundreds of years before Descartes? I also like the poetry quoted throughout. On Action, Ghazali quotes: Though thou pour two thousand measures of wine, Unless thou drink, no oblivion is thine! It's a short book to read on your hammock during these lazy summer days.

I stayed up until 2 am finishing this book! It was my favorite kind of story...well-written, interesting plot, developed characters, mystery, magic, and romance thrown in. True, it is a bit slow-moving, and true- the ending is not a grand reveal like I predicted, but everything else is so lovely that I forgave that oversight. FINALLY! A novel that lived up to it's 1,000's of good reviews! I have hope for humanity once more!

This book was one of my favorites growing up. I got it for my birthday one year and I think it was my first real exposure to poetry. I would always read the poems before I went to sleep at night because they are so clever and witty. This is a great book to have in a classroom because it shows kids how fun poetry can be.
