read this for dude theory research, they are on to some things and off on others, the articles in the back were way more interesting that the symposium transcript, more consistent. the book itself is nicely designed, seems like the right size for that sort of thing..

This book was not what I expected. Split into sections, I often found it hard to separate the 7 storytellers and remember their stories. The nature of this book, however, means this didn't matter too much to the overall effect. It was interesting to see the generational aspect explored, differences between mother and daughter, culture clash, language barriers. However, I didn't find any of the characters particularly relateable which meant the final climax was not really a climax at all, but rather obvious and to be frank, a bit of a let-down. This book did manage to avoid the oversentimentality that many books focusing on the relationship between mother and daughter seem to value.
Easy-to-understand, not boring! Great for young professionals!

The way I use this book to teach undergrads about ideologies in education and picture book theory makes this a good book for me. It does what I need it to do for my purposes. As for a work of literature on its own, it is entertaining and I'm pulled in by the artistry. It's a fine mesh of math and literature, and it can speak to children who find challenges with such things in school.

I'm giving this book 4 stars despite a few heavy handed preachy passages since I really did enjoy it overall.

The plot sounds so shticky, but the narrative was perfectly executed with the child voice enhancing the story on every page. Totally heartbreaking and inspiring.
Amazing. Potentially frustrating, but simply amazing. Manages to weave probably 15 stories without resolution into 1 story with a great ending.

There were so many things to dislike about this novel, I almost gave it 1 star. I can't help but compare this book to The Secret diaries of Charlotte Bronte, The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen, and the movie Becoming Jane, all of which are infinitely better than this waste of time. The dull, one-dimensional portrayal of Louisa May Alcott and her family in this novel is maddening and such a disappointment. I ended up almost despising her for her selfishness disguised as an intense drive for success. The first 120 pages or so are utter fluffy boredom then we really crash and burn a hundred pages later or so when *spoiler* a certain relationship goes from 0-60 5 seconds flat in the back woods. I HATE it when authors, movie producers, whoever..have the romantic relationship going from hi-we-just-met to we're-in-the-sack we must be in love. Sex is not always love people! Give us some foreplay at least. It's as if the author knew the book was sucking and said, let's throw in some tragedy and sex to liven things up a bit! Especially unbelievable considering the kind of strict moral code that Alcott was supposedly raised with. And yeah, yeah we get that she was a liberal, revolutionary type but this portrayal is absurd. Shallow, disappointing, and desecrating to the lovely, if unsubstantiated image I had of Louisa May Alcott.

I started this book the same day that I finished Sarah's Key, another book about the Holocaust, and I could not put it down. The ending of the first chapter grabbed me, and I had to know why such a woman would be so disliked. I'm not sure that the book answered that question, but it still was a great read. The book deals with the motivations for and consequences of heroic and shameful actions, how we live with our decisions, and how we judge ourselves and others. Overall, some people judge themselves too harshly and others are more pragmatic.
