This got repetitive, it was very simplistic. Obviously its a great topic that needs to be written about, though. Interesting ideas. Gould says religion and science occupy totally different spheres and the truth of one does not reflect on the other. The problems come because humans occupy both spheres and have a hard time wanting to reconcile them.

GREAT BOOK...well written but a hard read due to the subject matter.
a little book. seems like nothing when you pick it up. seems like even less when you read a synopsis...all that commotion over a stray cat bite?! but crammed in there is (i feel) a really strong, full, honest presentation of a despairing marriage and whole catalogue of yuppy guilt. really good.

I do quite love Dawn French, so I really thought this was going to be a great book to read. Perhaps I went into it expecting too much. I know I had waited far too long to read it because I refused to pay the £10 price tag for a Kindle book. It was reduced in price recently, and I snapped it up, and got reading. It's really not that great at all. Told by means of three distinct voices, writing in their own diaries - a rather depressing mother, a supremely irritating teenage daughter, and a slightly younger boy obsessed with Oscar Wilde. I must say the three voices are very clear and well-written for what they are, I just found it hard to get interested in any of them. Perhaps it's because I have nothing in common with any of those three, but they were not particularly likeable characters anyway. The crux of the story was simple and thus dragged on for a little too long. For a while, I was reading with Dawn French's voice in my head, and that made it better, but I couldn't keep it up for the whole book. It was also compounded by the fact that for the crucial part of the story, a sudden diary entry appeared from the dad, which was entirely jolting and inexplicable. I so wanted to like it, but I'm sad to say I didn't.
I just landed a role in this play today (the dead man of the title, who is much more animated than the name implies). I immediately purchased it as a Kindle book and read it. Wow. It's funny, touching, dark, disturbing, witty, and fun. It promises to be magic if we pull it off! And speaking for the other creative talent involved, I have great expectations of success in that. Without giving too much away, here's the initial premise: Jean, a woman in a cafe, annoyed by the ringing cell phone of the man at the next table, tells him to answer his phone. She soon finds out why he's not answering. He's dead. Intrigued, she appoints herself caretaker of the phone, and insinuates herself into the lives of the dead man's loved ones. Gradually, we find out more and more about the deceased, Gordon Gottlieb, and Jean finds out more about herself.
I finally got to this book! Yay!! The wait was totally worth it. I got a little confused in the beginning trying to keep track of all the characters but once I got that down it was great! A wonderful "whodunit!"
I thought this was fun and interesting, and I really liked the cooking/food aspect of the book. What I didn't like was the main character. She never stood up for herself, she led some man on she didn't care about, and she had a very bizarre relationship with her ex-husband and his family. I think someone in their forties should be able to stand up for themselves. Anyway, I liked the book, and will probably read the next one, I just hope the main character redeems herself for me.

I really enjoyed this book, but it partly has to do with family stuff that's been going on lately. I stumbled upon Ann Hood while reading a collection of essays by women and simply adored her piece. I'm wondering if anyone else is a fan.
Kind of a childish book, but I thought it was alright.

Amy's Thoughts: This is not a book to squee over; this is a book to quietly die for. I really, really don't know how to do this book justice in a review, so bear with me while I try. The Scorpio Races is set on a small island in the UK, and the ocean permeates the story. More. This story IS the ocean. The ocean is vast and deep and dangerous and compelling, moody and tempestuous and utterly, utterly charming while at the same time pervaded by a dangerous undercurrent. Ocean, water, blue-brown-grey, gull crying in loneliness from the craggy cliffs and the wind whipping in your face - this is Maggie Stiefvater's The Scorpio Races. It's quiet, and compelling, and oh, so utterly, utterly true. No, it's not a factual story, but what it says about people and life and grief and love - it's real. It's true. I've never in my life hated an author before, not even when J.K. killed off beloved characters in her Harry Potter series. I cried, sure, just like I bawled my eyes out for the last three chapters of Marley and Me; but I've never hated an author for something they made happen in a book. I hated Ms Stiefvater. At a certain point in the last quarter of The Scorpio Races, I wanted to throw it against a wall and scream in outrage and horror at the unfairness of it all. But I couldn't, because what she'd written was right; it was true. And I couldn't bring myself to not read the end, not see how it finished. And I'm so, so, so glad I did finish it, because the ending was worth waiting for, and is so bittersweetly beautiful that I'm literally crying again now remembering it. I love this book. If you love human-animal connections, real romantic relationships that are more about mutual respect and understanding than mushiness, difficult decisions, wild places, bittersweet endings and of course, killer water horses, please: love this book too. Final Conclusion: This is the most heart-wrenching book I can ever remember reading. I want to carry it around with me forever to remind me of all that is beautiful and important in life - and what exactly love is.
