Possibly the worst book I have ever read. Never have I seen so many shallow, cliched characters and scant creativity spread over so many pages.

Smashing continuation of the world of gods, goddesses, and heroes that Riordan created in his Percy Jackson series. This new series introduces three new heroes: Jason, Piper, and Leo. We also get to know some of the other new demigods who have reported to Camp Half-Blood since the bargain was struck between Percy and the Olympians in The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson, Book 5), and, of course, some of our favorites are back as well. Without providing too many spoilers, let's just say that we get to learn about some of the Roman aspects of the Olympian pantheon, more than just Juno is Hera and Jupiter is Zeus. There is a new threat facing the heroes and Olympus needs them more than ever. We also meet more gods, wind spirits known as auras, and more monsters that need vanquishing. Just loved this story and am looking forward to The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus, Book 2).

I was amazed by both the depth and breadth of this book. I came out of it with a much better understanding (I think) of the multiplicity of causes leading up to the Rwandan genocide. My one critique would be that Mamdani's argument seems to loosen towards the end, particularly in his coverage of the Rwandan Patriotic Front, making his discussion of the years from 1980-1994 perhaps less precise and a little less adequate than desired. However, in terms of setting up the historical background so that one begins to understand how the potential for a genocide could even begin to exist, Mamdani does an excellent job.

Very ambitious, but not a favorite.

Burroughs = James Frey? I almost hope so because I kinda felt like reading the too-messed-up-to-be-true story with one eye closed, afraid of what was coming next. Like how you look at a gruesome car crash from the safety of your zipping-by car or at friend who has had too much to drink and is embarassing him/herself and you have no way to stop it. I didn't dig this book. And despite most of the bad things happening TO the protagonist, I ended up hating all the characters including the narrator by the end of the book.

One of the first grown up novels I ever read...stole it from my parents when I was 12...
This book is expertly written and plotted. The twists at the end are truly surprising. It's about a traveling circus in the 30's, but it's also about growing old, about dealing with grief, what true friendship is, and what it means to really love animals. I highly recommend it, but it's not for the faint of heart. Some parts are really shocking. But I belive it's worth reading.
A huge fan of J K Rowling in general, this book is an exciting, "edge of your seat" conclusion to the series. Especially if you've been with Harry through the previous 6 books, you won't be able to put this book down.
