At almost 800 pages it isn’t really that the book is too long, it is more that the story just never gets to a really strong point, it just kind of carries on to arrive at many points. All I kept thinking was how it would have made a really great serial, because the characters were all really well developed and had shades of good and bad but some of their adventures were exciting while others were boring. I felt like if I put the book aside and came back to it after a few weeks the characters would stick with me because I enjoyed them and was interested in what was going to happen to them, so it wouldn’t be hard to come back to, but I also felt like maybe a bit of a break from the story would have made it all feel like less of a drudge just to be done and would have been more enjoyable.

I enjoyed it, and I hardly write fiction at all. But her prose is pleasant to saunter through, she's got some good stories in there, and she makes the connection. I read most of it standing next to the bookshelf.

After i read "Reincarnation", i read this one. I remember i was staying with my friend Hellen when i read this and she says it was weird how into the book i got. I completely refused to put the book down and had it with me at all times. I was sitten in taco bell eating when i finished it and already i had cried a few times from it. It was a really good book.

This book is about loving and simultaneously being ashamed of a gloriously messy family. For a parent, Glass Castle provides a new understanding of how an child interprets life at different points and as a former child helps interpret our own messy families. Hope, redemption and reconciliation are all tied in a lovely, sloppy, real-life way that is so different from most memoirs I've read recently. I hope my mom reads it someday.
