I'm a bigger fan of Huck Finn, but Tom is fun, too.

As someone who read The Swiss Family Robinson a dozen times in childhood, there is a special place in my heart for books originally written by a man for his children that are eventually published and widely read. Given my own struggles to produce even the smallest pieces of music or literature that someone might actually care to experience, I cannot imagine the dedication required to write something of this length and quality with such a motive. (Of course, I am sure that in both cases the original manuscripts were heavily edited by professionals, but the underlying stories and themes came from the author of record.) The Shack is quite effective as a study in theodicy for the masses, presenting Young’s ideas in a manner that rarely feels like a dry, theoretical thesis. Along the way Young shares his answers to many of the great open questions of theology, and I find his opinions to be echo or inform my own thoughts more often than not. There is a danger, however, that many of the readers of The Shack will take these interpretations as universal doctrine where uncertainty should reign. Indeed, Young may have more influence on the theology of the average American than any person living today. Although I found the exposition enjoyable, the story in which it is framed often got in the way. I could suspend my disbelief regarding the nature and appearance of God — after all, Young’s guess is as good as mine — but Mack’s character was too often unreal. I admit that I have not experienced love from the perspective of a parent or the anger of one whose child has been a victim of a horrendous crime, but the way Mack feels these emotions seems over the top. Mack is purported to be a seminary graduate, but he responds as though he is completely unaware of some of the basic tenets of Christianity. Certainly one could get through seminary without believing these things, but he could never have passed his classes without understanding them. Despite its issues, I would recommend the book to anyone who finds metaphysical questions worth asking. At 250 pages of mass-market diction it makes a fast and thought-provoking read.
I liked this very much. I was glad I read American Gods before I read this, although it would not be necessary to do so. It was a quick read, with a nice balance of comedy and suspense.
This book was delightful. An actress takes her lawyer to a small town in northern California, ostensibly to learn to be a "nerd" - but they end up falling hard for each other. They start out in relationships with other people (that aren't too serious), so that builds the tension between them, trying to do what's morally right and not cheat. And the sex is niiiiiiice.... Yep, very nice. Very very nice. Ahem. Mixed into the romance is mystery, murder attempts, and Bigfoot sightings, along with a fun cast of small-town characters. If there's one thing that I'd like to see more of in VLT's books, it's a return to the character development that was in the first book in this series, Nerd in Shining Armor, because that book was outstanding. After that one, I'd say this is my second favorite in this series.
I read this for my college Shakespeare 2 class (wanted to skip all that I'd read for high school and run with the obscure); and later saw a live-action play version at the Intiman Theater in Seattle. They did a cowboy version with a little Asian gal as Cymbeline. Not my favorite, but I think everyone needs to go see a live-action Shakespeare play at least once (preferably one that doesn't suck as much).
Okay, if you've seen my shelf, you know I'm a sucker for anything legal. This one was very well done - if you could get through the first 40-50 pages. Frustrating in its reality.
Meh.
This was the first book read where I joined a local book club and got together to discuss. The overall impression was depressing, but a good read. If anything, it makes you wonder if this is possible in a real life situation. Could you keep a secret for what you think is the benefit of others that you love? Does the guilt catch up to you in the end? Does it break apart love and trust? It would be a sober discussion I'm sure. It's a period of time in the sixties where society is hush-hush about such conditions as Down's Syndrome. A time when women are "taken care of" and not yet prospering in the modern world of women today. A good read, but it does take some time to sit and really absorb the author's writing.
Read this book after reading an article in Vanity Fair about a lawsuit against Augusten Burroughs, brought by the family that figures prominently in the book. Scissors, according to that article, is another example of a publisher and author marketing fiction as memoir.

¡Elegante, hermoso y convincente!
