Like other reviewers, I found this book impossible to put down. Boyd's biography of Zora Neale Hurston beautifully represents Hurston in all her complexity: novelist, playwright, anthropologist, folklorist, raconteur, individualist. Hurston emerges as an flawed, deeply gifted, experienced woman who lived her life according to her own terms, in the midst of societal constraints that limited her financial resources, but never her autonomy. Valerie Boyd mentions that one of her goals in writing this biography was to have Zora Neale Hurston's voice come alive. Through extensive quotations from Hurston's letters and other sources, she accomplishes that, and more. The biography provides a rich depiction of Hurston's life through her eyes and the eyes of her friends, associates, and (sometimes) enemies. Wrapped in Rainbows also provides illuminating contextual information, particularly about the Harlem Renaissance, African American cultural politics, the Depression, and life in the 20th-century South. Boyd provides detailed discussions of Hurston's short stories, plays, novels, and anthropological/folklore texts, including a careful reading of Hurston's autobiography Dust Tracks on a Road against the politics of publishing and Hurston's own motivations in masking some parts of her life. Boyd reveals in detail how difficult Hurston's life was, as she struggled to support herself solely through her writing, a feat that few other African American writers could replicate at the time. She also develops a clear discussion of the complex differences between Hurston and other black writers of the Harlem Renaissance and after, who questioned Hurston's commitment to racial equality because of her refusal to write fiction with an overt political message. A triumph of the biography is that Boyd represents Hurston with all her flaws and all her gifts - Hurston emerges clearly as an individual who deserves our respect for her commitment to honoring her gifts and living her life on her own terms. Through her humor, her humanity, her energy and her love of life, Hurston drew around her a circle of friends and admirers; in many ways, Boyd's biography creates one last party for Hurston to shine in.

Still an amazing book series, I liked this one a lot as well as the last ones. I think strictly speaking the 3rd one has been the best book so far, but I can tell some big stuff is about to happen. Just wish I didn't have to wait for however long for it!

This is the worst book I've ever read. The contempt I bear for the author, whose name we shall not speak, rises beyond the stars and planets, swirling and exploding into a galactic miasma of untempered rage. The Alice books are as sacred texts in my mind, and this ridiculous novel stands as nothing but an abomination. I wrote a review of it ([http://inthewhat.blogspot.com/2006/11...]) when I was only a couple of chapters in, and the thing was tame. I focused on how the guy's a suck writer with no style who picked stupid names for his sugar cookie characters. Then I finished the book and the only reason I didn't write another review and make my feelings more clear is that I was afraid the sizzling hatred would melt my laptop. Contrived, lame, awkward, pretentious, unintelligent, and having the worst ending ever. Oh don't forget putrescent, a delightful word that puts us on the path towards an accurate description. With every page I turned, I felt a gut-wrenching desire to hunt down the author, cut him open, and write "How dare you?" with his viscera. The pain was almost unendurable, but I made it to the end on pure adrenaline. The experience has changed me, and I fear I may never find my soul again.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as Stuck in Neutral, although they are considered companion books. This one is told from the point of view of a high school athlete whose brother is disabled. Unable to communicate with his family, his brother assumes that he is incapable of emotion or thought, and is angry at the raw deal he has been given in life. Additionally, he is mad at his father for abandoning the family, assuming his father ran out when things got too hard to handle. This is the story of a teenage boy who is torn between the responsibility of staying with his family, or creating his own future away from them.
