This could have been so, so, so great. A group of girls venture into the "Shadow City" underneath New York City, discovering secret abandoned speakeasies, dancehalls, catacombs, and tunnels -- a dream come true for passionate urban explorers like me. Unfortunately, the author loses faith in the intrinsic interestingness of the concept and whips up an unsatisfying -- and unevenly written -- scenario involving espionage, ransom kidnappings, and secret royalty. It would have been perfectly sublime to read about these five twelve-year-old girls wandering plotlessly underground. Oh, well. Five stars for the idea, definitely.

Fun little story. Geared for a younger audience than the Wicked trilogy, the prose and plot were more stream lined, but I though the author's use of cliches was a bit over the top.

I liked the way this book ended the series. I was happy to see the Philip and Rachel ended up together, but there was really no conflict in the relationship at all, which in real life is great, but in books it's kind of boring.

I hated the ending!!! This book kept me engaged the whole time and could not wait to see what would happen next. After reading this I feel like this might be how certain people (who will remain unamed...) got elected into office!!! That is so scary to see how money can really be maniputlated. It was a change of pace from my usual reads so I enjoyed the diversion... but it left me lacking in many regards.

some good insight into investing in stocks but could have been written in half the pages it actually takes up. for those who have very little finance background I would recommend first reading an introductory personal finance book (I skimmed personal finance for dummies and it seemed decent) before any attempt to understand investing in particular asset classes like stocks.

He addresses the new cold war we are entering, climate change, economical challenges, and the possibility that if we don't learn to work together with all the new rising powers on a sustainable future we could see the worst World war ever.

Thorough and well-researched discussion of an interesting topic that does not get a lot of attention. The author does an excellent job of combining personal stories with history and statistics, and her prose never becomes too "academic". The focus is on surrendering mothers, but she also presents perspectives of other people involved in these situations including the parents of surrendering mothers, adoptive parents, and adoptees. Though Ann Fessler is an adoptee herself, she manages to limit discussion of her personal experiences to the beginning and end of the book and generally maintains an objective perspective throughout the rest of the book. Overall well-written and worth reading.

This is an interesting frame story about a group of people who elect to join a "writer's retreat" for three months. Several people join up; and then find there's no way out. They're there for three months. It's what the game show Survivor might have been if Stephen King had created it. (Actually, that's probably not true--Stephen King would have created The Long Walk.) Overall, it was an okay book, but I found myself more interested in the short stories (written by the participants) than the overall story of the participants themselves.

This is an amazing story and one, even with the wars, that you seem to enjoy the perseverance of the company until the last chapters when the whole deal goes to pieces. Very nostalgic for someone in heavy industry who longs for the glory years of iron and steel when there was no outer or upper limit.
