This was delightful. "I Am the Messenger" bends YA/crossover, and the subject matter at times could be quite adult, but it all combines into an unforgettable book that I'm so glad I grabbed simply because "The Book Thief" wasn't yet available. It's quite funny, passionate, raw and accessible. Few can pull that amalgam of emotions off, but almost no one can do it as well as Zusak achieves it here. It may not be for everyone...admittedly listening (at least for a trial run of this, get the audiobook of it, by the way) to the vulgarity and sexuality combined with the youth-targeted writing was a bit of a shock at first...but after awhile, I found myself embracing the style. Plot heavy and a loose on the details, this is a character study that is great for what I would guess is anyone 16 and above. It's truly a hard one to explain, but to put it simply, it reminds you just how good doing the right thing feels. I'll be buying the book at some point just to have in my permanent collection, but as it is, there's something for almost everyone here, and I count myself blessed to have picked this gem up. I think you will too.

It's a manipulated, easy, feel-good high, but I won't say I didn't get sucked in.
This book is full of edge of your reading glasses action! As big as it is, it's very worth your time to sit down and be warped to another world.
Great book. It was little long (500 pages with small print) so it is not a quick read.
A beautifully illustrated "amuse bouche" before the long-awaited entree of A Dance with Dragons this summer (or fall? Or next year?!?).
Khas Pramoedya Ananta Toer!! Namun dijalanan Midah belajar banyak.

Mary Gordon didn't have one good thing to say about her mother - far too angry a memoir for me.
Roald Dahl proves his talent with this short story collection. Each one is twisted or horrific in some way... Nearly every one gave me the willies. My favorite: "The Landlady" and "Royal Jelly."
I enjoyed this book in a very non-traditional way. I was more connected with the minor characters than the main character (refelcting on that now makes me think that's on purpose). After a huge drama (1924), the main character leaves her European home for being persecuted by Christians for being a Jew. The rest of the story takes you through Ellis Island and through our still developing country to Alaska. By the end of the book, I was both sad and relieved it was over. I think you just need to read this one for yourself. Five stars for sure for me!
