I did quite enjoy this. If I were taking away points for style and proofreading I'd have docked a star, but I can't fault the book itself for the mistakes of editors and translators. There are things that don't quite translate... cultural references that the translator should have made more accessible to the non-Russian reading the book. There are also sloppy mistakes like repeated sentences and typos. However, the book itself is a lot of fun. Complex tales of vampires and magicians and shape-shifters set in an original, richly imagined universe where the 'Others' live alongside normal humans, going about their business, and engaged in a war between Light and Dark, all beneath our noses, without us ever really being aware. Kinda like the Harry Potter world, but better developed, and darker. The two movies so far made inspired by this book are enriched by knowing some of the background information that is not delved into in the films. the Night Watch and Day Watch movies are both based on plotlines in the Night Watch book. I haven't read the Day Watch and Twilight Watch books yet, but I have them on order from the library so perhaps some of the other elements of the movie that seem wholely unrelated to the books are pulled from one or both of those.
As a young man who came of age in rural North Carolina, I thought that this novel of a young man coming of age in rural North Carolina was lackluster. Wolfe's prose is at times extremely beautiful, but his wordiness can be trying. Not for everyone.

I have enjoyed all of Dan Browns books. I like the twists and turns and a little history thrown in.

Looks like I share a similar taste in the short story with Mr. Sedaris.

a wonderful read from one of the US's most eminent literary critical which gives a great sensation of the 1920s & 1930s, esp the hardships of the depression

this is a delicate little nightmare of a book. its got a great land-of-the-dead thing happening, like all my favorite jonathan carroll and kevin brockmeier themes, but a little less playful; a little scarier. i finished it and immediately reread the first 100 pages, so i suggest you do the same. however, too many uses of the word "desultory", which is just a word i have a personal aversion to. twice in one sentence will make my skin crawl...
I enjoy memoirs and can add this to my list of exceptional ones. It reads like a story and, at times, I had to remind myself that this was actually someone's life.
Psychoanalysts are generally crackpots unless proven otherwise.
