As most people on this site have observed, this is a thorougly depressing book. However, I enjoyed Hardy's gritty realism. His depiction of a society still reeling from the fall of feudalism is powerful. His eye for details - such as the spreading blood stain on the ceiling in the inn towards the end of the novel - is arresting. Though he's never overtly atheistic in this novel - the lack of a driving sense of purpose or destiny is a more legitimate critique of faith than an outright rejection of it would be. At times Hardy's narrative style is a bit rough around the edges. It reminds me of the omniscient voice over narrative on Lars Von Triers last two movies - 'Dogville' and 'Manderlay'. It works, but the tone is odd and can, at times, interfer with the story.

I picked this up in high school when I saw it on the library shelf because, as a Jew, I wasn't a Christian either! Oh, how naive... I'm not sure how much I absorbed.

Great writing, difficult subject. Question, do creative people always hurt those who dare to love them?

This book is about high school juniors/seniors and their families touring Bowdoin, Middlebury, Colby, Amherst, etc. Bowdoin people, you remember Dick Steele, the old admissions guy? He's in this book, very thinly disguised. So is the author. Lots of sex too. Very funny stuff from the future Jennifer Finney Boyland, head of the Colby English Dept. and a great, humorous writer (She's Not There is also quite good).

This was a page turner for me, it held my attention all throughout. However, I was a little disappointed in the ending as I was expecting a bit more of a shocker or connection between the two cases presented. In some ways, this book reads like a movie script and I wouldn't be surprised to see it eventually made into a movie. I could totally picture watching this as a movie as I read some of the dialogue as some of it was a little bit cliche. Overall, though, this was a great murder mystery and I look forward to reading Tana French's second novel.
I have anxiously awaited this book, and I'm thrilled to say it did not disappoint. Parts early in the novel were a bit slow, admittedly, but on a whole I found it to be a fantastic addition to the series, and I look forward to several years from now when the next installment is published. The end left a lot of unanswered threads, but that doesn't bother me. This is certainly not meant to be a stand alone novel, and I get that.

The most graphic macabre book I have ever read.

Definitely Steinbeck at his finest. The way he interwove three different stories (history of California, his own family's story, & Cain & Abel story) is amazing.
