Elizabeth Crane's prose is smart yet straightforward, funny yet meaningful. In When the Messenger Is Hot, she experiments with form and point of view while creating memorable characters and scenarios. There are lots of stories in this book, so I'll just highlight a couple of my favorites. The opener, "The Archetypes Girlfriend," is more of an extended description than a traditional story. Is there such thing as a stereotypical idiosyncrasy? Yes: Crane manages to display tons of them as she hilariously examines several personas of women who get under the skin of vulnerable men. Another standout is "Christina," in which the narrator encounters a dancing ghost baby in her home who she chats with on a day to day basis. The main thing that makes this book short of spectacular is its repetitious themes. Which isn't automatically bad...it's just that she exhausts them through the stories. The death of a mother, dating debacles, and the habitat comparison of Chicago vs. New York became predictable. The stories could have been presented freshly without incorporating these same ideas over and over again. It made the stories feel overly autobiographical--like the writer was having a difficult time detaching herself from every character she created.

Yelena has endured unspeakable horrors, and now she is given another chance at life... sort of. She will be the taster for the commander, checking his food for poisons. Of course, she cannot really escape her past, and one way or another, she'll have to deal with what happened to her. I really liked this book. I liked that we weren't given all of Yelena's information right away, and that as other characters got to know her so did we. I also liked being drawn into the political intrigue. I'm looking forward to the next book.

The 3rd book by Krakauer I've read, and well researched and written as always. It's a distrurbing trip into the lives and motivation of religious fundamentals and a history of the development of Mormonism.

One of the greats. David B's illustrative style captures the bleak subject matter and the whimsy of his inner world. There should be more graphic novels like this.
I was crazy about this book and all the others in the series when I was a kid. I read it again recently and I still found it enjoyable, but I realized something that I somehow didn't pick up on when I was younger: Madeleine L'Engle is insane. She is crazy.
My favourite Hardy novel and arguably the most depressing! The characters in the book are very, very human and emotionally frail; steer clear of it if you're looking for a cheery read. However, underneath the bleakness is something positive in its humanity and understanding that makes it stand out from Hardy's other novels.
Great read. Its too bad they screwed up the film sooo bad.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. It is laugh out loud funny and bittersweet all at the same time. One of Sophie Kinsella's best.
