One of my favorite stories by one of my all-time favorite authors. There’s a place in this world for all of us.

After reading all the praises printed on the cover of the Finnish translation of this book, I was expecting more than I got. I liked the small, simple story itself well enough, but the philosophy added to it was redundant. Don't misunderstand me, I agree most of the "teachings" and "lessons", but after one philosophy course I took in school and the twelve subsequent years I've lived since have taught me these lesson better than reading someone else learn them ever could. I don't understand why someone, anyone, had to write a fictional book about it and I can only feel sorry for the poor souls who need to learn these lessons from this book.

Entertaining, smooth-flowing and lots of action? Check, check and check. It's like reading about my favorite wizard, Harry Dresden except Charley is female, a grim reaper and has ADD. I look forward to picking up the next book.

I loved Meg Cabot's twist on the Persephone myth. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

On Writing for Children and Other People by Julius Lester. What a great memoir by a great children's writer. Sad that this seems to be his declaration that he is done with writing. Then again, he could change his mind. This book is not just about his writing. It's about his faith--growing up black in the south, the son of a preacher, and converting to Judaism when he was an adult. It also seems to be his attempt to set the record straight or let his feelings be known. There are several short chapters throughout that focus on just one idea, such as a revision of ideas he presented in an essay he wrote in the 1960s or a detailed explanation of why and how he chose to do a rewrite of the racist story Little Black Sambo. He uses lots of great quotes from others in this book and is himself very wise and quote-worthy. I hope he's wrong about this book marking the end of his writing career.

Disturbing but compulsively readable. It's no great work of literature but it is a story told in a completely different way from anything I've read. You should have a strong stomach because the first few chapters have some explicit violence.

Picked up one of the recent ebooks from the Torquere range (which: my god, but those summary emails are a highlight of my week. Not even joking.) This probably deserves a little more than 2 stars - it wasn't bad by any means - and the prose was workmanlike enough, and the story was sufficiently interesting to get me to do more than read the summary, so props for that, but it does suffer some of the usual gay fiction tropes of having some really cliched phrasing and plot in parts, and some terrible euphemism/word choices during the sex scenes. Mostly felt like it would benefit from tighter editing by a fussier reader. I don't regret spending a couple bucks on it, but I'm unlikely to reread this one. (Or, tl;dr -- frankly, my taste is spoiled by fandom. Heh.)

Better than any straight biography. It goes into the cultural obsession without being obnoxious.

I read this after reading "A Tree..." and thought this deserved as much praise as its predecessor.
