In a world where Spiderman's girlfriend hasn't even picked up the tiniest clue about defending herself and not walking down dark alleys, it's refreshing to come across a Red Riding Hood who takes down two lecherous woodsmen and a wise stepmother who uses her magic to protect her stepdaughter, Snow White. A few of the stories are a bit nauseating in their desire to show women in the best light (hell, we've all got flaws), but all in all, this collection is a fun little read about ass-kicking women who stand up for what they believe in.

Some words are a bit outdated, but that is the only negative I can think of with this book; the story and the illustrations are magnificent. Taylor loves this book. If you want a children's version of the story of Pilgrim's Progress, this one is excellent.

A good book. The fictional story of a Nigerian refugee in London. Moving, but with some humor too. Very harsh at times as it addressed some harsh realities.
Incredible and inspirational for anyone who creates things. Godin is a "business" writer whose ideas apply to every field.
The author was my professor in the J-School at U of O, so I must read this one. :-)

I really enjoyed the characters in this book and how they interacted. I also learned a little something about Afganistan in the process (my knowledge is very limited on the subject).

Bryson recalls growing up in Des Moines, Iowa with great fondness and his usual excellent sense of humor
(8/10) I'm not exactly what you would call an expert on architecture (i.e. I know basically nothing about it), but this book did a pretty good job of explaining how something seemingly concrete like house design intersects with very ideological ideas of the self and inner life. Archer provides a detailed summary of architectural theory and practice relating to the suburban home through the past three centuries, and explains how these developments embodied new ways of thinking about the world. Like a lot of academic texts this one is a bit repetitive in its quest to be convincing, but it's also quite readable and easy to understand for someone without background in the subject. Architecture and Suburbia basically does what it says on the box, but does it quite well.
Gathering Blue is a companion to the Giver. Kira is a crippled child in a society where no value is put on life except what that life can provide for the community. Like the giver Kira's village is a dystopia. However, Gathering Blue lacks the subtlety and complexity that makes the Giver a modern children's classic. Kira's village is pretty obviously bad from the get-go, unlike in Jonas's village where there are some temptations that make that way of life seem appealing, especially at the beginning. Gathering Blue doesn't provoke the same amount of thought the Giver does.
