I loved this story! It was a lot of fun. I was surprised to learn that Ian Fleming was the author. I definitely saw aspects of James Bond, though.

A warm and nice novel, masterly charachtrized.I enjoyed reading it.
About the writer's experience on the Cidel basketball team in the 1960s. My fiance's father left it at our house and I picked it up - a quick, fun, lighthearted read.

I really enjoyed this memoir of growing up in a crazy house with a mother who never threw food away. Just scrape the mold of the cottage cheese and it's just as fresh as the first day it was purchased. I enjoyed the author's sense of humor and her ability to laugh at herself.

It's probably redundant to call a fantasy novel magical, but Heir to Sevenwaters feels more magical than most. I wish I hadn't read it yet, so that the pleasure of discovering it was still to come. In this book, Sevenwaters middle daughter Clodagh loses her place in the family as the trusted, dependable one when the Chieftain's baby son--and heir--disappears from his crib when she is on watch. The disappearance of her brother thrusts Clodagh into a trip to the Otherworld to regain him. It turns out he's not the only one she will have to retrieve from that treacherous realm. Marillier does a beautiful job developing Clodagh; by the end of the book, I felt as if she was a cherished friend, one that I sympathized with enough that tears marred a few particularly heart-rending pages. Her transformation from homebody to brave adventurer is gripping and inspiring (if a homebody can find the courage to face likely death to save her loved ones, who couldn't?) I'm having trouble thinking of a fantasy novel that I've enjoyed and been touched by as much as this one--and I've read quite a few.

well, I finally read it. glad to know firsthand this story and writer who is referenced by so much in american lit. i had a hard time being patient with the narrative. was dismayed by the viewpoint and how much and little our paradigms have shifted. how permeated by the supernatural (devils and demons) christian new england was... surprised by the objectification of the child, how demonized she was, how Hester thought nothing of raising her in the town where she'd be shunned rather than moving, though i guess that would have ended teh story before it began.
