This is such a crazy book. Douglas Adams does a really good job. I enjoyed the whole series.

i know this is a classic, but was really not all that impressed. it's not even that the content disturbed me, it just gets repetitive and a bit pathetic after awhile...

In the village of Bedsley Priors, Lillian Haswell is known by all as the apothecary's daughter. It is not allowed to have females in this type of business. She has many desires, one of which is finding her mother. Julie Klassen places you in this time period very well. It was a little slow and predictable in places. However, it was a good read.

Wow. Just wow. I finished this in a couple of days thanks to a gig proctoring some exams. Now, I have to admit that power reading "Housekeeping," which is basically what I did on this third time through, is not advisable. The great Doris Lessing said, herself, of this novel: "I found myself reading slowly, then more slowly--this is not a novel to be hurried through, for every sentence is a delight." Ms. Lessing is correct. Robinson's prose is too poetic and precise to read quickly. I am, with head down, sorry to say that I did read it with too much velocity. Yet, even as I knew I was not sufficiently savoring every sentence, I still say, "wow." When a work of literature hits one with such power on the third reading, and especially under such wanton neglect on the reader's part, labeling it a classic is not sufficient. P.S. And if that recommendation is not enough, Ms. Robinson confided to an enraptured audience recently, that I had the pleasure of counting myself a member, that she doesn't revise. It just comes that way. Now, read some of her sentences with that revelation in mind!

I am currently between novels and decided to give some of the classic fairy tales a go. What's the risk if they're free (on the Kindle) anyway? Beauty and the Beast was such a quick read! You can easily read the book in half the time it takes to watch the Disney version, so I certainly recommend it if you have the opportunity. According to Goodreads, Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont is not the original author of Beauty and the Beast. She took author Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve's story and made it into her own. Apparently, her version is shorter and that attributed to her success over Villeneuve's. And to think, I grew up thinking Walt Disney made up these stories! I found it interesting that Beauty is never called "Belle" in the story. Belle, of course, means "a beautiful woman" and I can see why Disney chose it. ;) Also, Beauty is not an only child as she is in the movie. She has two (awful!) sisters and three brothers. These among many other differences made the story worth reading, for the comparison if nothing else!

I couldn't even bring myself to finish this book. It got worse the closer I came to the end. To me it was very dry, you had no idea what was going, and there was very little emotion that came through. Perhaps it's because it's more like a mystery, and I personally am not fond of mysteries. I would not recommend this to many people. Although, one nice touch was that at the very end of the book there was a list of the flowers and their meanings.
Absolutely silly and hilarious! Don't we all know these people and situations? Loved this book!
The concept of this book is so simple that it almost seems a waste to read an entire book that deals with how the actions you're involved in now are shaping your future destinations in life. In fact, Stanley even mentions a couple times in his book that he hesitated writing sections or the book as a whole for this reason. And yet, I can't escape the fact that I found the book riveting. It was an incredibly challenging message delivered in the easily-accessible style of Andy Stanley. He walks you through the idea in a progression that leaves you at the end of the book (as well as in between) desiring to check yourself and the direction you truly are headed in - not just the one you wish you were.

Amanda Dexter and her story occupy a funny little place in historical fiction: most stories cover Edwardian England, WWI, or WWII, but this book covers all of those periods. However, its main focus seems to be on "The Long Weekend"--the interwar years in British India and England. Amanda is the daughter of a British lieutenant stationed in India, and when she is very young, she is sent to live with her relatives in England--proud, wealthy people who are not always welcoming to her. She faces the problem of many Empire children--she is never at home, no matter where she lives. Years pass, and she eventually rejoins her parents in India, where she matures into a woman, and then a widow. She travels the world, witnesses a few scandals, and eventually returns to England, where she causes a few scandals of her own. This was an entertaining historical novel to read, even though it had its flaws: it was rushed and disjointed at times (probably because it covered so many years), and some of the scandal and life decisions did not feel believable for the time period.
