I think the Buffalo News and my book club picked a great selection for this read. I also think if I were still teaching English in a high school setting I would be mighty tempted to teach this book -- but the one steamy sex scene and some mentions of male genitalia and its reaction kind of rule that out. However, it is PERFECT for book clubs and for college lit classes. I loved the literary elements in this book as well as the finely crafted characters, the detailed setting, and the fast-moving plot. The prologue which is repeated much later in the book starting with the stampede and the murder was actually an excellent literary device for getting the reader hooked and wondering -- who is Rosie and why is she trying to kill some man. Now I promptly forgot this prologue as I got into the story and only recalled it when it was repeated. It was at this point I saw how skillfully the plot had worked its way around and how many elements of the story line came together at the moment the prologue depicts. Sara Gruen does an excellent job in advancing the story line through the characters and the setting. Mind you, I can't say more details because I don't want to give away much of the story. I found the theme of animal cruelty and poor treatment of other human beings to be difficult to endure at times -- this does NOT mean I think it was a waste. I mean it was so REAL that it made me want to really back PETA's circus protests. If nothing has changed in 80+ years....woe us!!!! The circus life during the depression and the constant traveling was hard enough, but the way the roustabouts/the workers were treated was absolutely horrendous. The clear line that Jacob must follow between workers and performers once he is elevated from worker to vet is reminiscent of many British stories where the classes don't mix much. I didn't realize it was so prevalent in the circus culture of the past. I think it exists much less today. I loved the ending....the coming full circle in Jacob's life, the fact that a stranger cares for him more than his own children/grandchildren/greatgrandchildren do. His hope and optimism at the end....but I won't reveal any more than that. The character of Jacob was a particularly complex one, and I loved his relationship with Walter, the Clown. I even felt that the character of Rosie was very well depicted. I felt that Uncle Al was a stereotype, but I'm not sure that was a bad thing here -- it was necessary to tell the story and you don't want him to be a sympathetic character. I have mixed feelings about Marlena and August. I think August is a complex character and his wild mood swings can be very real in a person, but I didn't really get much of an impression about Marlena at all. It was like she was there to advance the plot, be the object of desire, and be the star of the circus, but nothing more. I wish they could have done something more with her character -- why did Jacob really fall for her? I didn't get any sense that it was really more than a pretty face and a "rescue" from an evil man. The stereotype of the drunken old man who goes paralyzed from drinking bad Jake is actually a good plot point, and it was kind of heart-breaking to see how an "injury" like that would really ruin someone's life forever with little hope. Overall, this book was entertaining, eye-opening, well-researched, and a good literary effort. I love a good novel, but I love a good literary work even more -- and this is indeed one!!! Highly recommend it.
