I loved this book! Saramago has a way of tapping right into the human condition and making a very insightful commentary on the state of the world and our relationship to each other. Not your typical novel/fiction. Highly enjoyable read. I feel ready to read it again.

This is another book that I use with my students, to teach them the proper etiquette with the Qur'an.

After ignoring some (disgusting) parts, I find this novel as a great one, kind of documentary novel shows how things changed in Egypt…

I thought it would be more interesting because I absolutely loved Going Solo, Dahl's tale of his war years in the RAF. However, this book spends an awful lot of time name-dropping famous British people. As in "oh did you know the Earl of Gloucester's son Sedgewick the III was also involved in the spy effort in the US? And he was friends with Ian Fleming? Oh...and this other famous old man was also involved." This might be slightly interesting to me... except I am not British.
A real eye opener for a beginner in the subject such as myself, but be prepared to take some notes to jog your memory as you go along, and recognise you'll probably be using this as a springboard rather than memorising the whole thing all in one gulp. The parts that read like narratives are few and far between, but those will stick in your mind if you're a flimsy 2000's arts graduate like myself-the siege of Antioch, for example. Warning-sometimes it seems like everyone involved in the earlier crusades was called Raymond or Bohemond. The definition of the crusades used here is extended right up to the dispersion of the Knights Hospitaller at Malta by Napoleon, which I understand is stretching the boundaries for some purists. Stick with it, Riley-Smith seems to have his reasons.
One thing to note about this book is that it's pretty complex -- although it's written at a third grade reading level, I'd say the content is more appropriate for late 4th or 5th graders.

I was quite disappointed with the plot. I thought it was going to be the female Alex Rider but with more romance. But it turned out to be a bit cliché I didn't really like the love interest, 'Josh' and Cammie didn't live up to her reputation much, but I am going to read the next book.
I was thinking I would love this book, and I didn't. It was just OK. I would have liked a bit more of a historical perspective of what was happening at the time in Sarajevo. Also, I found it tough to form any feeling of relating to any of the 3 main characters.

What starts out as an interesting premise and setting quickly turns into a predictable, sour story where the characters don't change and act like complete idiots. I found myself despising the main character for being such an absolute moron and bungling every situation. The motivations are unclear for most characters and the predictable plot moves so quickly that it doesn't even take advantage of the whimsical setting available. This book has no idea what it wants to be - is it a romance? Is it suspense? There's little of both and the ending is so dull and uninspired that I actually threw the book across the room. Dreck.
