Just finishing my second read... While it starts slowly, this is a wonderful book... Rushdie is extraordinary at writing about a specific place and time, and the place and time of this novel--the September 10th United States--is a fascinating one.

** spoiler alert ** Tragic and brutal. I appreciate that Collins didn't ruin this series by crafting a Hollywood ending for it. I wish Prim hadn't died. But, otherwise, I think Collins did a great service to her story by being true to the brutality of war, the atrocities it creates & the scars it leaves behind. I also thought the ending was incredibly poignant.

This is a series that I would not expect to like, not being that interested in name brands or shopping, but I really enjoy these books. I laugh out loud at Rebecca Bloomwood's antics, and sometimes worry a great deal about her obsession with buying, and the trouble it causes her. These are delightful, easily read, and Rebecca is such a likeable, caring person, depsite her sometimes frustrating short-sightedness and materialism.

SCTV was, probably, one of the most influential shows in my young life. Thus, I had to read this book when it came out and I think I will re-read it soon. If I remember correctly, this is a nice "warts and all" history, which is as it should be. I also remember that Thomas had quite a knack for summing up what was attractive about each of the performers comedic approaches (something about Catherine O'Hara and how each of her characters was, in retrospect, a really sharp take on women and their position in culture, I remember finding both astute, revelatory and somehow moving). "As a comic, in all seriousness..." VIVA MELONVILLE!

I think the complexity in the book relies on the simplicity of it-- the relationships between a father and his children, a family and a community, etc, are depicted in an effortless way, but the emotions and complexities of every day life are captured perfectly...its hard to find a more noble character than Atticus Finch.

Well, it took me quite a while to get thru, but I thought this was a very well written, well researched book. If I had been pressed, I would've guessed that the Americas might have had 100,000 people in it at the time of Columbus' arrival. I always pictured Indian tribes as small, nomadic, maybe 200-300 people. I remember getting that impression in school and I guess it just never got corrected until now. Very good book.
Brilliant poetry - and I'm not just saying that 'cause she's my mom.

I'm so glad I picked this up in the weeks leading up to the election. It was particularly interesting because the Republicans had talked about TR quite a bit at their convention. The funny thing is, TR is just about as different from George W. Bush and today's Republican Party as you could get. Morris tells the completely engrossing story of Theodore Roosevelt's youth and early political career, all the way up to his short vice presidency. TR led a fascinating life and the way Morris writes, it can be easy to forget this is non-fiction. And, at the same time, Morris relentlessly documents everything. While biographers often have to imagine what their subjects might have thought at various times, TR was such a prolific writer that Morris is often able to just quote him directly. And, while Morris clearly likes his subject, he is not afraid to show Roosevelt's weaknesses. You get the complete picture of TR as a master politician, but also as a fallible human being. The book is nearly 800 pages long, but it was never slow. You get adventure, political intrigue, humor, and personal insight. I completely loved it and can't wait to read the next volume.
This is the kind of book I think I'm not supposed to admit that I enjoyed but I would be lying if I didn't say that it made the bus ride to and from work a lot more enjoyable.
