I read this book in 2 days because I wanted to figure out who Michael was- real or imaginary. At first I didn't know, so I was intrigued. Really enjoyed the story, but it reminded me a little of that movie "City of Angels" with Meg Ryan. One section was the bedroom scene, but I was thankful it wasn't too graphic. Quick easy read, cute little love story. I'm a sucker for love stories.
I recently read an interview with Lethem in which he said he jumps topics in each new novel to keep from being labeled. He cites this book as putting him in danger of being "that detective writer." It's easy to see why. This is a tight, deft story set in modern-day Brooklyn that wraps a slippery, twisty plot around a central character that has to deal with Turrets syndrome as he solves a mystery. Great reading, and very fun.
I am loving this series. Off to get the next book....must know what happens to Bella.

This was an audio book that I completed on my daily commute. First I will review the audio production: The voice acting was top notch, the characters were differentiated but not flamboyantly done. The pace seemed a bit slow at times, but there is a ponderous feel to much of the book so this was suitable. In places, when Raskolnikov's thought and emotions were particularly fevered the pace picked up marked giving a gripping, edge of your seat type of feeling. Now for the book: This is the second Dostoyevsky novel that I have consumed, and it was an incredible experience. Much of this novel is spent dealing with the philosophical nihilism of late 19th century Russia and you can see the seeds of the Bolshevik revolution and Soviet atheism playing out. Raskolnikov has an idea which is a play on Ivan Karamazov's thought that without God all things are lawful. He has determined that truly great men have no responsibility to follow the law, and indeed all great men leave a a trail of blood in their wake (Raskolnikov idolized Napoleon). The novel move through Raskolnikov's crime, his mental break down, and finally his redemption. It is a hefty novel, but well worth the time and effort. Dostoyevsky has a robust view of redemption that doesn't involve the saccharine sentimentality that you see in much writing of this sort.
Frankl's classic exposition of logotherapy, outlining the fundamental search for meaning at the heart of human existence. Even when every last bit of freedom is taken away, Frankl reminds the reader than one can always choose how to respond to a situation, with dignity and humanity, such that no evil can touch one.

It was fine. I could point out some things that I didn't love about this book, but it would quickly devolve into nitpicking, and I don't want to give the impression I disliked it. So let's just say this: I laughed out loud a few times, just not as much as I thought I would. It was fine.
nice runaway story
Other than the part where the guy gets raped up the ass, this book was fabulous. It's one of about three books that has ever brought me to tears in a good way.

I bought this for my boyfriend and then read it myself. It is clever and the art is great.
