I received this book through Goodreads First Reads. Saints Preserved is an engaging and accessible guide to relics and saints. I was worried it was going to be incredibly dry, but was pleasantly surprised. It's an encyclopedia, yes, but not a dull one. I also found it easy to follow, and my knowledge of Catholicism is not extensive, so a layperson should have no trouble understanding this book. I would have liked more pictures, however. I dream of full color glossy inserts.

I wish I could give this book 3.5 stars. 4 stars implies that I thought it was UP-THERE good, and I'm not so sure. But 3 stars implies that I thought it was average, and I don't think that either. I really, really liked most of the book. The best was without a doubt the main character, Vanessa Michael Munroe. She rocks! WAY hard-core: the kick-ass, take-no-prisoners, female action hero that I love to cheer for! The detailing of the setting for 85% of the book - West Central Africa- is my second-favorite part of the book. The delicate interactions with the people and culture of this area are so detailed and authentic, told with care from the author with first-hand experience. The author's backstory - spent time as a child in Africa, among other places around the world, as part of a religious cult - lends the authenticity to the detailing of the setting, and in itself is my third-favorite part of the book. What I liked about the story is also what I didn't like - almost too much action and adventure made it the story a bit tedious. Maybe a little more character development would have slowed the pace and gave it a bit more teeth. Also, way too many coinicidences - I mean I supprot a suspension of disbelief in storytelling and all, but sometimes its taken too far. All in all, a good read. Will read the sequel. Look for word of a movie deal coming soon.

I really enjoyed reading about the ancient cultures, as well as some of the modern cultures, portrayed in this book as a way for us to understand the idea behind the survival or collapse of a society. However, the book did seem a little preachy (which is funny considering that I am very liberal and environmentally conscious), especially at the end, and although I felt like the first 2/3 of the book was excellent, the last 1/3 kind of dragged. Overall, it was a good read and gave me lots of unique tidbits of knowledge in such a way that I still remember them even a month after reading those chapters.

This is a very good, worthwhile book. It's thought-provoking and educational. The author does a great job of demonstrating that there are no easy answers, and even the best existing solutions present their own problems. All that being said, I struggled to get through it. It can be bit boring at times.
