This book was a 4-4.5 stars for me. I let my bias of growing up in Hawaii sway a 5th star out of me. I really enjoyed Casey's writing. I really liked her style of description and I really like how she was able to make a handfull of the big wave surfers the hero's of this book. Not to mention that I learned a great deal about the science and study of big waves as well. I am very happy that I read this book.

"Had" to read it in college and was amazed to find that I loved it!
In a word, this book was great. Relentless, reabable, relentlessly readable, it falls short of five stars for just two reasons: 1) as Eggers himself says, the middle section is the weakest, often failing to keep my interest with its anecdotes regarding Might magazine, and 2) its stylistic experiments occasionally distract from the emotional impact of the story itself. That said, I really must emphasize my enjoyment, even awe in reading the book. One of the reviews on the inside cover described its style as "raggedly beautiful," and while I can see where that's coming from, I think there was a kind of seamlessness to the text that really drew me in. By "seamlessness" I guess I really mean consistency of voice, consistency of the author's self-conscious insertions into his narrative. While it's true that Eggers uses different techniques to tell his story- the mock MTV interview, the dialogues with Toph and John that suddenly step into new levels of self-awareness- one always gets the sense that Eggers is with us, just behind his words. Whether he had some master scheme in mind in his structuring of the book or not, whether the events and characters are "real" or not doesn't matter to me in the least, and it's a testament to Eggers' skills that such is the case. He told a damn good story here, in a damn good way, and I'm better off for having read it. Bravo!

I liked this book because it puts lots of scientific arguments against a creator into one place and then refutes them all with good evidence in favor of a creator. It was very interesting.

Great writing style, easy to dive in. Very disturbing finish.

I think this book is kind of different than most books. It's really exiting and I really like books that are really exciting. I think it is just as good as the first one. [For a second in a series, I think this one does okay. The adventure is different enough and the characters are still fun to be with. I am looking forward to the third whenever it comes.:]

Have been reading Heather's blog dooce.com for years now and knew I had to read her book too.
Could have done so much more with Altair.
This book! Once again, my initial disappointment at reading a book with an Oprah sticker on the front (yep, I'm a snob) was washed away by the time I made it a few chapters into the book. Wroblewski's retelling of Hamlet on a Wisconsin (I think?) dog farm--a description that makes people laugh every time I provide it--is moving, thought-provoking, and surprisingly great. Four stars because at times the author is a little too in love with his own descriptions and language--great passages dragging on for too long, etc. But the book got me more than I expected it too. I loved finding the character parallels (not everyone is obvious at first) to Shakespeare's plays, and despite knowing how it would all end, the book hooked me with hope, sadness, disappointment. I'm still thinking about the implications of taking away Hamlet's voice. No, it's not Shakespeare, and it's not even a classic, but it's pretty dang good.
