Macabre, but fascinating all the same. If you've hiked the canyon it's hard to put down.

I read this book before moving to Korea and found it filled with stereotypes and overgeneralizations. It is the type of book that talks from the "first world" view trying to explain how those crazy foreigners do things. I would have burned it if I believed in that sort of thing.

ridiculously intense - this woman actually killed herself a year or so ago because she couldn't handle the shit she wrote about anymore, or possibly the fact that it all keeps happening again. For Travis, to prove a point.

When I first started reading this book, I was a little put off by the present tense, and by Foster's apparently limited voice. But the more I read, the more I realized that the voice I was having trouble with was Foster's voice, and then all my problems with the voice went away. Foster talks like some people I know. They have heart, they're kind, they do their best and they haven't a malicious bone in their body. They're good people. Foster's good people, too. The voice is a real treat. And then the baking! Oh, the baking. When times are tough, bake (and make sure everyone else helps you eat, or you're going to have an even harder time.) I loved this book in the end, and it was a job VERY well done.

This book is a good tool to help kids empathize with each other. Have them anticipate characters reactions to the grouchy lady bug and have them ole play various alternative scenarios.

I thought the book was well researched, easy to read and somewhat interesting. However, I was living in East Africa at the time when I read this, which may have coloured my view, but Paul Theroux comes across as a whiny little snot in a lot of this book. I remember at one point where he's moaning about how the sidewalks are cracked at Makerere University (where I was actually living when reading this book) and I somewhat wanted to give him a slap, or at least make him suffer from food poisoning (which, yes, he also talks about a lot). Le sigh. I'm tired of old, whiny white men writing about Africa. That said, I think that most people would enjoy the book, I was just a little too close to the situation, and undoubtedly, over-critical.

I absolutely adored these books. They told a wonderful story of a future that is as corrupt as the the utopia that the characters live in. The characters are very likeable and very real. While you follow love interests, friendships, and losses you go on an emtional roller coaster ride with the main character, Tally. It's fascinating the ideas that Westfield ties into the growing plot. He shows us that the only way that we can learn is by learning from our mistakes instead of hiding from them. This triliogy helps you grow a little with each book you read.
Of all the books I've ever read- this is the one that I keep going back too. It's the kind of book that gives you something different every time you read it.
