Amazing. Check the copyright date. Can't believe he wrote it so long ago, yet it's still so relevant. I love Kurt Vonnegut.

I really enjoyed this book; I found it to be a refreshing break from the usual books that I read (too many vampire sagas I'm afraid). At first I wasn't too fond of the novel having a complete third person narrative and thought that I was going to struggle to form an emotional attachment with any of the characters - here I am happily admitting that that wasn't the case at all. I'm sure to be looking out for some of Harriet Evans' other books. :)

I sincerely wish that there was more that I wanted to say about this book, but I find myself strangely lacking the energy. It's good, but in the grand scheme of things didn't quite get me as excited as some other books, so I don't feel as if a five-star rating is warranted. It's genuinely funny and although prior to this novel I had zero experience of Mr. Pratchett, I've been a fan of Gaiman for some time now. So of course, it works for me. It's humorous, involves an absurd take on Armageddon, and I'm just sacreligious enough to have really enjoyed it.

A bit too drawn out at the end but over all quite a good read.
Not quite what I was expected. Glad to know the ending (which is not very heroic or awesome as I thought). It was meant for Tolkien's children anyway. But the book is a proof that the first movie adaptation isn't just some random pocket-filling work.

mermaids ... named Fred. Ok ... her name is Fredrika. And she doesn't like the ocean. Too many talkative fish and nasty sea weed that gets caught in her hair. Then again, Fred is a Ph.D. in Marine Biology who works at the New England Aquarium. So she's got enough fish to worry about. What happens when a stranger walks into her life and upsets everything ... a gorgeous marine biologist and close on his heels is the High Prince of the Black Sea (aka Prince Artur ... king-in-waiting of all Undersea Folk). What's a cranky, argumentative Fred to do? Have an adventure. Good read ... not terrific but good enough so I read the rest of the series.
The memoirs of the only woman on the American occupation team to write Japan's post-World War Two constitution, I picked this up not quite sure what to expect. I found it very well-written and easy to read. It was fascinating to read Gordon's thoughts of writing the section on women's rights in Japan's constitution and the process 'behind the scenes' of SCAP, the occupying force. That was the section I was most interested in but after the occupation of Japan, Gordon went on tell of how she became a cultural ambassador, bringing over Asian arts and performers to the United States. It was quite an interesting read and I recommend it to anyone interested in modern Japan.
I really wish I had read this book in high school and better yet had a course in it. It would have saved me a lot of grief. As a society, we need to teach children how to deal with emotions. I wish I had not taken it out of the library because the code in the back only works for one person. So, I was not able to take the EQ (Emotional Intelligence)test. I may need to buy the book. I loved it all, but I have picked out my favorite parts of each section: Self Awareness Strategies: 1. Ask others for feedback about how you handle your emotions and listen carefully to what they say. 2. Weekly or bi-weekly take stock of your life and write down situations that you didn't deal with well and then list which quality that you wanted to honor but didn't. For example: Honesty is the quality and then write down a situation that I didn't handle well where I wasn't completely honest. The next time a situation like this comes up, I might deal with it differently because I will remember the list. Self Management Strategies: 1. To prepare for change, make a list of things in my life that could possibly change and write down ideas for how I could deal with that. I really enjoyed doing this and it really has been helpful. Social Awareness Strategies: 1. Become a great observer. Learn how to sense the mood of a room and check to see if your observations are correct. 1. Listen. Listen. Listen. Don't interrupt. Relationship Management Strategies: 1. Use these phrases more: "I am sorry." "Please" "Thank You" Fabulous book. I highly recommend it.
