My least favorite of Jane's novels.
For some reason, I remembered the ending as different than it was. I won't ruin it for you, though. I'll just tell you that the moral is nonconformity, and I always thought it was about aquiescing to the demands of society and getting rid of that which does not suit your whims.

Aha, I luffed this book. Maybe it was just the added Fax, but maybe it wasn't. In my opinion, this made up for the completely sucky fourth book, as this book actually had a plot and new baddies to fight. :3
A most excellent body of work from one of Science fictions best Authors.

** spoiler alert ** As far as I can remember, I had never read a Hulk-centric story until picking up this book. I had heard that writer Greg Pak was doing a great job with the Hulk in recent years, and I was highly intrigued by the little I knew of the Red Hulk storyline. For these reasons, I decided to give the Incredible Hulk a chance (even though I am typically not interested in the Hulk as a character). I was pretty satisfied with this read. The beginning of the volume (the Defenders vs. the Offenders) wasn’t great, but it did give some good story beats concerning the mystery of, “Who is the Red Hulk?” The second part of the volume was better, covering the fallout from Banner losing his Hulk identity, and continuing with the Red Hulk mystery. I should say that I was spoiled concerning the true identity of the Red Hulk months ago, but still enjoyed reading as the characters questioned who this mysterious monster really is. The Red Hulk is a good Hulk villain because he is not simply a red version of the Hulk that everyone already knows. He has new powers that make him intriguing. As I read this book, I learned that he has the ability to absorb the powers of others, and was even able to absorb the Hulk entity out of Bruce Banner. I’m sure that this will make for interesting future stories, and I have decided to read on in this recent Hulk saga.

If you like fantastic, unbelievable novels, this is a great one. Lots of symbolism. The devil, just hanging out in the world, wreaking havoc. Very strange. Loved it.
Got better towards the end of the book.
Roland Barthes is an important and insightful literary critic, and this is one of the more accessible works by the author. I recommend this book whole-heartedly - and mostly due to the final essay: "Myth Today". The essay is one of the most ambitious and convincing analyses of modern day myths - a structural explanation of the uses and functionings of myths in mainstream, capitalist culture (an analysis that pertains to literature, film, comix, advertisements, etc.).... I find this essay to be a compelling anticipation of deconstructionist theory. Way ahead of its time and definitely well worth the read...

A good read, and an interesting perspective on post-9/11. Not as world-altering as Foer's first (Everything is Illuminated), but still worth a read.
The summer before Dice and her friends go to college Crane goes missing. His brother believes that it has something to do with the house. Dice hesitates to get into anything magic or other-worldly after Sin’s disappearance. Marsh, Crane’s girlfriend, and Dice’s best friend soon convince Dice to look at all the options. Looking into things brings ghosts back, and a world of trouble for Dice. The first novel Swoon caught my eye because of its provocative nature. The truth is that teens are confronted with sex and drugs. It happens, and in these books it happens with rich kids too. These books do not go in to detail, but I am glad that these issues are there. It doesn’t fabricate the urges of the youth, but says yes, Dice wants Sin. That is one thing I have always liked about these novels. I enjoy the nature of the book, and the scenery, but sometimes scenes are a little confusing. Dice can gush about one topic or another, but while she is gushing something very important will happen, and I will be thrown out. This happens more than once and left me a little confused, and not feeling any suspense for the scene. Tosh is a new character introduced into the mix. He helps put together a band with Dice at the forefront. I loved how the music related with the story. It also bonded the characters closer to one another. The only thing that drove me nuts was how much Dice didn’t worry about Crane, instead all her worries were about Sin. This novel has more ghosts in it than it ever did. One of those is the problem, Antonia. Antonia is a character that I felt pity for, but at the same time more than a little annoyance. She is a bad guy who doesn’t really know she is bad, which is for me, the best kind. Everything for Antonia is very tragic, and reminds me of a twisted tragic romance. The story slowed a little for me towards the middle, but then picks up as does the music. There are some great scenes, but it doesn’t change the fact, that like Swoon I felt distanced from the characters. I don’t know if this is because I am not a teen, or due to the characters themselves. The story is neat, and I loved the ending, which I felt was worth it, but I want more out of these books. I want to feel something more from the characters, I am just not getting. The story is neat, and it played out in a way I didn’t suspect. The paranormal in these books is where the novel shines for me, and it has definitely grown since Swoon. I believe that teens will enjoy it, but I don’t think it’s a book for everyone. It does make references to drugs and sex, but not in ways that I believe are crude, and it has actually toned down since the last novel. All-in-all I look forward to the future of these books.
