I am always enthralled by books about interactions/visits to Heaven. Cannot even imagine what it would be like to hear my four year old child describe Heaven. Many moments where the hairs stood up on my arms. I enjoyed the book up until the talk of the "future", and it bugged me. I had a hard time after reading that part.

I don't know who I would recommend reading this book, it is pretty hard to take. It should be read by anyone who thinks war is an answer to all problems. I read this years ago but the images are still stark in my mind. It takes place just after WWI in an Army Hospital. Johnny, a soldier, lies in his hospital bed with only his mind left. He has lost his limbs, his sight, even his face. He recalls his former life and the war as he lies there desperately injured with no means of communicating except by blinking his eyes yes or no. I have never ever forgotten this amazing anti war book. Dalton Trumbo was black listed in the 1950's by the McCarthy era hysteria and his book was not allowed to be published. The fact that his book was removed and not allowed to be sold only reinforces it's power. I would hope people would read this book and take something important away with them. It is hard to read but also hard not to read once you start. This book was originally published in the 1930's.

Who hasn't read/reviewed this book? What can I add? Only that I had the most visceral reaction to any book I can remember as I came to the end of this one. It's not like anything I've ever read and I have nothing to compare it to--a completely unique reading experience.

While Short enough to read in an afternoon Cycle of the Werewolf was a good story. The story takes place with each month getting it's own chapter. Told from the day of the full moon in that month flashing back to the months previous events. As far as the story line goes it's pretty much a classic werewolf story. A small town is hit by a string of grisly murders. The corpses showing up each morning following a full moon. (view spoiler) King does take a few liberties with the cycles of the moon miraculously allowing each to fall on a major holiday, Valentines, Independence day,Halloween, and New Years eve all are full moons. Stephen +King does address the fact that it was creative licensing for effect rather than not knowing better.
Old donkey, cat, dog, and a rooster get together and decide live their masters, before they throw them out, to become musicians. Their plan was to go the town Bremen, but on the way there they scare the thieves away from the house they were rubbing. The thieves came back, but all of them made scary noise again so thieves run away fast and promise never come back. Our friends stayed there together and took care of each other. I love that story, even though it is retold it is still close to the version I heard when I was a little. My students love it too.
Random paragraph breaks during dialogue made this book rather hard to follow. Also, random capitalization ("a well-known drug Lord"?) and lapses from past into present tense distracted me from the story.
Next up, after The Darke Affair in the Drunk On The Moon series by Paul Brazil and a whole universe of terrific writers.

I read this book when I was in high school and remember really liking it. I just reread it, and I'm sorry to say that I don't think it holds up. I know that it was original and controversial and feminist and shocking when it was written, and maybe I've become jaded by having read too many dystopian novels in the last few years, but this time around I just found it really boring and slow.
