Wow, Roman theatre is crazy violent.
amy krouse rosenthal writes with the exact same flair and random brilliance as every single one of my friends -- perhaps why this book wasn't as unusual and unique as i expected. though there were some passages i was compelled to read aloud to anyone who'd listen, i mostly had the nagging feeling that i already know amy from somewhere, maybe chicago where i too grew up. she mentions names of people i'm familiar with like greg allen of the neo-futurists, and the whole concept and brevity of the chapters remind me of neo-futurist plays from 'too much light..' things that made me want to write amy: 1. she offers to bake people pies 2. she loves mail, and i love mail, and we mail people need to stick together 3. 'alphabetized' was misspelled as 'aphabetized' early on -- how typos make it to the paperback edition is beyond me. 4. on the page where she talks about q-tips, it says "See also: french fries" and it reads as if she also sticks french fries in her ears. reasons why i probably won't write amy: 1. i actually didn't relate to her in a lot of the book: she was popular, threw parties, was a cheerleader -- later had the luxury of writing in coffee houses constantly and dropping off her dry cleaning, has kids, is married -- is she really like a friend of mine at all? 2. i'd really just be in it for the pie.

This was a good read. Very girly. I also thought they did a good job on the movie.

A terrible, yet compelling story of two women in Afghanistan in the second half of the 20th century until 2003. I learned a lot about the wars fought there and what it was like for the people living in Kabul as various groups took over the country by force. I loved the Kite Runner so much I was almost afraid to read this for fear it wouldn't measure up to my expectations. Instead I find I liked it as well and maybe better than Kite Runner.

I feel badly about having to rate this as a 1 star. Here are the reasons why I didn't like it: 1. The grammar was poor enough that I could detect it and wanted to make corrections. This is sad as most people know me for not caring about this much. For me to notice it, it is not a good sign. 2. First person from a male professor didn't do it for me. 3. Repetition of the no fuck rule between Professors and Co-eds in every chapter became tedious. 4. The familiar vernacular used in this story became increasingly distracting. Examples are "soooo very" and "you know". 5. What is becumming? The concept of this book was interesting. I like the professor with a naughty co-ed. I'd like it more if the co-ed coerced the professor or vice versa into sex. The entire book was about the professor whining about the rule against fornication between a professor and a student. This was unappealing for me. For me, the book came across as a cock tease with very little delivery. The long sentences mixed with big words caused the book to stutter instead of flow. I wanted to enjoy it since the author is new to us and a member of the group. Unfortunately, I was not able to enjoy the book. Recommendations: 1. Some smut readers also read classical literature, so make sure the story contains a well constructed plot. Contrary to popular believe, sex in a story won't carry the book, even for those of us who enjoy sex scene after sex scene. 2. Repetition is good for learning new skills, not in books. 3. Grammar does matter. Please also have a proof reader go through and use proper spelling. There is some leniency with the word "cum", but when words are spelled as if it were over a text message, this is distracting from the story line. 4. Using first person from a man's viewpoint is gusty. Make sure the male is an alpha if you chose this path. Women do operate on baser instincts too. We like the strong decisive man, taking control in fantasies, especially steamy fantasy.

Standard quasi-okay Brunner book. Mostly not very science-fictiony at all. I wish there had been a little more, uh, exploitation of the obviousness of the main character's insanity, but there wasn't. Some parts--the occasional time forking--were very well done, but I really feel like there was some meat to the book that Brunner missed. Could have been better, was much much better than say Children of the Thunder.
