Overwhelming, spotty and subjective -- but great fun to read.

Not a massive short story fan, but am a massive Murakami fan, so am just dipping into this between novels. Does have the story of 'Tony Takitani', which is a beauitful, quiet, languid film. See it!

Re-read this one in one sitting during a long car ride. Made me wish I new more about the Russian Revolution so I could truly appreciate the parallels.

If you have any interest in horror fiction, The Dark Descent is essential. In fact, if you're new to horror, don't bother with anything else. This compilation will not only introduce some of the best works in short fiction of the last hundred years, but it will do so with a clarity of vision that actually allows you to survey how far we have come and what remains to be explored. Each work in this anthology represents an incredible peak in style and expression that has never been topped regardless of its age, and the editor Hartwell introduces each of these terrors lovingly. I can't tell you how wonderful it was for me to find out about authors like Clive Barker, Robert Aickman, Oliver Onions and many others for the first time in this book. Enjoy the feast of horror!
This book is really hard to get into, at first. Gilbert comes off as a "poor me" kind of person, and I have heard people refer to this book as "My First World Problems" This seems to sum it up. Divorce is tragic, but somehow you don't feel as bad for her when her consolation prize is a paid year of travel around the world. The book picks up when she finally reaches her first destination of Italy. The only reason I enjoyed this book was her description of the people she meets and places she goes. From Luca Spaghetti to superstitious locals in Indonesia, this book made me wish I could just pick up and travel for a year.

I just didn't like it. I hadn't heard of it prior to reading... and it didn't do anything for me. I'm not a beat. *shrug*

A continuation of the story begun in "True Believer". Sparks takes imperfect characters through common problems (getting married to quickly, unplanned pregnancy, difficulties with job, etc.) weaving a story of love and friendship. What I appreciate about Sparks is that he seems to have a real understanding of the differences between the way men and women think and react to situations. The characters are not perfect and as a result, they are believable and characters you can relate to and learn from their experiences.
Wow this book is so good! I don't read a lot of ebooks but this one really blew me away! It was a nice mix of paranormal with a Final Destination vibe. It really made me feel like if I was ever saved from a disaster, fate would find me *shiver*. I gotta say, P.T. Michelle is a phenomenal writer. She clearly knows how to successfully weave a story in a way that grabs the reader. Nara is a pretty typical teenager in a lot of ways. She plays soccer, she's not really popular but she has a good best friend, and she's an overall nice person. But there is something very different about Nara, she dreams about her future--or more specifically, her next day. For this reason, Nara does great with soccer, tests, and any obstacles that may get in her way. She has rarely found the need to change an event but then she dreams about a bomb going off in school and she is forced to act. She knows she can't sit back and let students die. After Nara stops the bombing her dreams stop. This turns her life upside down because she never realized how much she relied on that knowledge. Then she gets to know the dark, mysterious Ethan. He's a newer student and rumors have been flying about him already. People think he is dangerous and he does nothing to stop the talk. But Nara can't help but reach out to him. Ethan is the one there for her even after her best friend stops talking to her and the "mean girls" make her life miserable. He's the calm, silent presence at her side. And, of course, there connection is more than lust. They seem to be connected in a strange way. This is where the drama really kicked in and I got spooked! So many aspects of this story really surprised me. The chemistry between Nara and Ethan could have set my Kindle on fire! With very few words or actions they were able to speak volumes. They had that type of connection where each little touch gives you goose bumps. Sometimes Ethan would just speak a few words and I would blush like mad. Brightest Kind of Darkness brings up an interesting idea--can you run from fate? This book is full of twists and turns and it is impossible to not care about these characters. If you want a spooky paranormal tale with a sizzling romance inside, grab this book! I am already stalking P.T. to see when the next book in this series is coming out!
