A very poorly written book about an amazing charachter who has made a great impact on individual around him and the health care system. worth reading just to get to know a bit about Paul Farmer.
It's a series of short chapters that deal with corpses. It goes into the details of what can happen to your body if you donate it to science. From the anatomy lab, to forensics research, to crash test dummy experiments, even crucifiction research. There's also a fair bit of information about alternatives to the standard burial or cremation. Overall, this book was a great read, but I know it's not for everybody.
London's Portobello Road is the referenced title for Edgar-winner Rendell's new novel. When a man finds an envelope stuffed with money, he posts an ad-and is soon linked to the secrets and dangers of others around his Portobello Street neighborhood. Rendell's psychological suspense at its best. Louanne http://tinyurl.com/4tlkaoo
When I first picked up Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, I was hooked from the first page. What resonated with me was the fact that the central character, Mara Byrne, lost her husband of 30+ years without warning and that was only the beginning. In the first few chapters we watch her deal with grief and the good intentions of family and friends. But when Mara decides to move on with her life she finds a key to a safe deposit box that belonged to her husband. The box contains nothing more than a letter that appears to have come from a paramour of her husband. Mara is crushed, her life is put on hold, and she feels that she must confront the unknown woman in order to bring closure to her own life. As a thriving author of mysteries herself, she feels quite content following up leads until she hits a dead end. A fortuitous find of an ad for a dectective named Alex Strange, however, hits her hard. You see, Alex Strange is the name of the detective in Mara's novels. But this Alex Strange soon becomes her ally as they travel cross country and go up against some dangerous players in an international game. Ms. Kidd's voice is a new one and one that will be heard again hopefully. This book was an easy read with just the right amount of suspense and not too much to trip up the casual reader. This writer shows great promise and I look forward to her next book.

I re-read this book over the summer and was pleasantly surprised.
The Comforts of a Muddy Saturday By Alexander McCall Smith This is the first book I have read by this author, and I picked it up because I had read a positive review of it recently. In this story, Isabel Dalhousie, the owner and editor of a literary journal, who lives in Edinburgh, is asked to help clear the name of a doctor whose reputation has been ruined due to a scandal involving a drug trial. We also meet Isabel’s lover Jamie, who is also the father of her young son, and who is considerably younger than Isabel. This causes her no end of worry, though he seems devoted to both of them. There is also Isabel’s niece, Cat, who owns a local deli, and used to be romantically involved with Jamie. I wanted to like this book, but as far as I’m concerned, it just never took off. None of the characters were particularly appealing to me, and there didn’t seem to be much of a plot. Though I enjoyed the descriptions of Edinburgh, there was nothing else that really grabbed my attention. By the end of the book, I was trying to figure out how this was supposed to be suspenseful, and wondering what the point of the book was in the first place. I guess if it is supposed to be a narrative of a slice of time in the characters’ lives, it does the job. But my first thought when I finished reading the last page was, “Why was this book written?” I had kept going, thinking that there would be a point where things all started to fall into place, but if they did, I missed it. It also really annoyed me that Isabel spent so much time worrying about whether or not Jamie really loved her, was going to stay with her, found her interesting and attractive, etc. Once again, we have a supposedly independent, educated woman, who seems to worry primarily about a man. I got really sick of that whole thing by about the third chapter. This was a quick read, so at least I didn’t spend a whole lot of my time reading it.

This book was given to me by my nephew. It probably isn't a book that I would normally pick to read, but I am glad I did. The authors style of writing was very descriptive and each scene that was described was easy to imagine. However it was difficult to follow along at times when the author would jump back and forth from the present time and the past. Sometimes I was unsure which time period the character was in. I wish the ending would have been more "tidied up" and resolved some relationship issues as there was a lot left unsaid. But, the story was intriguing and left me wanting to keep reading. My favorite passage was this..." I want to use the time it takes. Time is important to me now, I tell myself. Not that it should pass quickly or slowly, but be only time, be something I live inside and fill with physical things and activities that I can divide it up by, so that it grows distinct to me and does not vanish when I am not looking."

Man i loved this thing. I think the design is pretty amazing, of course the paintings are excellent as well, but personally i prefer the pencils.-and all of the stark ink work throughout the novel. The story is very very broad,-i am surprised Ross could actually weave the whole thing together, well done. Any fan of comics throughout the Marvel ages would get a kick out of this one, at least i did, and i had to look up a couple of the characters because they are out of the obscure(but i guess that is what the companion book is for! :)

Oh snap! How did I manage not to review this one, or mark that I'd read it? Anyway! I burned through the Private prequel in two sittings. While it wasn't quite as awesome as I'd hoped it would be (it peters out a bit toward the end, though it starts off CRAZY), it still momentarily slaked my thirst for more of this series. The only thing that bugged me is there isn't quite enough exposition for my taste -- I know they want to make is so if you were just reading this book, the rest of the series won't be spoiled for you (though okay, the first four books kind of would be), but since it had been a while since I read those, I had trouble recalling some of the events, characters, etc. that they casually refer to here. It also made me more inclined to read Privilege, the spin-off series that features Ariana Osgood (the narrator here) as the main character. This book also taught me that many of what I'd taken to be the writerly quirks of the Private series (things like constantly mentioning their coiling and uncoiling shoulders, or starting sentences with "girl" as in "Girl could barely see straight") are actually quirks of the main character and narrator of those books, Reed Brennan. I'd always suspected she annoyed me a bit, but now I'm sure. Long story short, definitely a decent read (and a must-read for fans of the series!). I will be keeping my eye out at my local library for Privilege and also for Paradise Lost (though I think I ruined the latter by reading the first sentence of the back cover -- if you haven't done this, DON'T do it! Totally spoils the cliffhanger ending of the previous book).
