This is a tough book to say "I liked" but it was a fascinating read, and one of the few books that I've read that gave me real nightmares. (I've read quite a bit of horror so that's saying something). You get a glimpse of the charisma that Charles Manson apparently possessed in his ability to influence those in his "family", and it's hard to imagine that anyone can revere him as they do after reading this, but there are those that do. The telling of the story was compelling enough that I did read other Bugliosi novels after, as I found him to be quite good at telling the story of real crime dramas.

I started out hating this play... Hamlet whines for five acts and can't decide what to do. Sadly as I get older I begin to understand why someone would whine for five acts...doesn't mean I like it...

Brilliant loved it!
Odd to be able to read what is credited as the first book in a genre. Something that inspired Orwell to write 1984, that perhaps inspired Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and a good many others since. I'd never heard of this until doing a search on dystopian lit. (my latest drug of choice, haha). As for the book, it's not particularly great, but that so many other books have elements of it in them, only more refined, it's like reading a rough draft of something. Almost like the author couldn't believe what the world would become and couldn't fully imagine it himself, and left it to later authors to fill it out. All the classic elements of the lone rebel led astray from the one all powerful state, and feelings of guilt over not being able to resist, the opening of the eyes that blind obedience may not be the best thing, and finally the remorse of having lost all the comforts of the only thing you've ever known, are here. The inhuman aspect of the characters, that they sometimes appear as people, and sometimes as mere machines, in conflict with their animal past, but striving toward, yet not quite in control of their perfect machine selves. If you're into the genre, go for it, if you're just passing through, go on to 1984 or Brave New World, the ideas are a little better formed there.

I wonder if my life was a grand, sweeping analogy, would it be as interesting as this? And what animal would represent me? I'm hoping for something between panda and skunk. I love the levels in this book--the layers of religion, allegory, fable, war, coming of age.

This story is like a single, exquisite truffle in the middle of a large, glittering, crystal platter. It's delicious, and if you only wanted a small bite of decadent chocolate, it would be perfect. But, seeing as the platter would easily hold a large chocolate torte, if you wanted a bit *more,* you might feel a bit frustrated. At 50 pages, this is short, even for a Novella, but it's also Hart, and she's an amazing talent. . The first 25 pages are rich with character and backstory-- Kendall and Zane are two FBI agents forced by the bureau to take R&R on a tropical retreat with other agents recovering from various bad on-the-job injuries and events. Kendall's and Zane's injuries are of the soul-shattering psychic kind: Kendall's partner was killed as part of a raid when he ran out from cover, colliding with a warning shot Zane had fired. Both parties feel incredible guilt, and Kendall blames Zane. The tension practically crawls off the pages. As we hit page 25 though, I started wailing, "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!" We can't be at the half-way point. The next 25 pages were a rush to cram in some hot lovin' and a HEA. All of which is well done. However, the characterization and conflict coupled with awesome writing would EASILY support a single title release that could burn up the Romantic Suspense charts. She released this story the first time in 2004, but she's re-edited it for Carina, and I dearly wish that she would have considered reworking this into a longer story. I suspect that she has different, but equally delicious treats baking for readers right now, and having fallen in love with her voice, I will happily consume whatever she delivers. If you are new to Hart, this would be an excellent introduction as it's spicy, but not as hot as some of her later works, and it shows off her writing chops in a nice little package. And if you're a fan of Hart, this is a nice way to bide time for her next ST release. However, I wonder if $2.99 for a 50 page story is a little high--this would be far more appetizing at .99 cents or 1.99--a more reasonable price for a tasty little truffle.

In the late 800s, the role of a king's daughter was to marry to benefit her father's kingdom. That is the role that fifteen-year-old Aethelflaed has know all her life would someday be hers. But she never expected it to happen so soon, and is shocked when her father announces that she will marry Ethelred of Mercia to strengthen an alliance against the Danes. She couldn't be less prepared for this news, and is shocked by the fact that in a few short months, she will have to leave her family to marry a man that she has never even met. And there are those men that would wish to stop this alliance - Welsh and Danish raiders. Because of this, Flaed's new fiance has sent a bodyguard for her, Red, a gruff man with a mysterious past. But Red has more to offer Flaed then just protection. He can teach her to defend herself using fighting skills that have traditionally only been taught to men. These are skills Flaed will need if she is to face the men who are plotting against her. This historical novel was both exciting and fascinating, with a setting not often seen in young adult historical fiction. Aethelflaed grew up to be a great heroine, but I had never heard of her before. I loved reading about this strong and very real girl who became a leader at a time when women's roles were limited.
One of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors. How could I add anything to what's already been said about this "light, bright and sparkling" book? I love the romance between Elizabeth and Darcy and the subtle manners of their time period. I love all of Austen's novels, but this one has a special place in my heart.
